My trailer doesn't have the safety cable installed. I need it for inspection.

Do I have to take off these clips and drive the pins out, or how does this thing come apart??

You have to remove those "c clips" if you don't have the correct tool, long nose pliers bent at 90 degrees near the tips, you can use a couple of awls or nails to wedge the ends of the c clips apart. I replaced the safety cable on mine a few years ago for around $5 and 3 hours of my time in labor. in retrospect it I would have been better off replacing the entire surge brake assembly for $120 and a lot less time.

Moa_chaser, how did this replacement work out for you. My dad was helping me put the boat in over the weekend and disconnected the trailer but left the surge cable connected and broke it off when he pulled away. So I am guessing the brakes are locked up now and I have to fix it. Any hints.

I didn't get to do it yet. I have a short tow to the river and I've gone without since I got the boat several years ago (I didn't know it was supposed to be there). I didn't want to miss the holiday weekend. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow or so, then order the part.

Any update on your progress on the trailer breakaway cable replacement. I have to fix mine before the end of the year and looking for some tips.

I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't done anything with it. I'm 10 miles from the river, and I also bought a little 16' fishing boat so we haven't taken the Yamaha out quite as much. It's looking like it will be an off-season fix at this point...

Any idea on the make/model of your trailer?

It's a galvanized MFI for a 23' 2004 SX230.
