hwo many cylinders does the 2016 195 with 200hp have? Dealer said engine is 1.5l 4 cyl 4 stroke.

Everywhere I'm reading (earlier models) are 3cl 4 stroke.
So who's right?

Interesting. We were also debating buying a Yamaha as 195. Had 180hp vortex engine, 4 cyl, 4 stroke. Now we're thinking we made a mistake. We don't want to throw in $30k+ and end up with a unreliable engine or not enough speed to throw out a skier or tube.

Yamaha 195 has 1.8 liter supercharged 4 stroke 4 cylinder engine.
The scarab counterpart has a 1.5 liter supercharged 4 stroke 3 cylinder engine.

The naturally aspirated Yamaha 190 has the 180 hp 1.8 liter 4 cyl 4 stroke engine. Great solid motor especially the brand new ones. I personally would up to the 195 with the supercharger but then you are almost within range of a 21 footer from Yamaha as well.

There are seperate threads for the release info here on the site for each of the 2017 models. It was a great update to the Yamaha boats and there is a lot of information here! Look around for the model specific pages.

As much as the new Rotax engines are technological marvels, one major issue with new Rotax jet boats (Scarab, Chaparral, Glastron) has been sub-par dealer support.
Not sure I would trust that dealer with my Rotax maintenance and repair...

Have you purchased the Scarab?

Generally the BRP power plants have higher horsepower ratings but achieve lower performance. For example looking at boattest.com results a Yamaha 242XE has an overall length of 24', a tested weight of 4,752 pounds and is powered by two normally aspirated 1.8L engines while the Scarab 255 Platinum SE has an slightly longer overall length of 25', is 300 pounds lighter at a 4,430 pound tested weight and is powered by two 150 Rotax 4-TEC fuel-injected engines. The Yamaha achieves a top speed of 50.3 MPH at 7,550 RPM while obtaining 2.1 MPG. In comparison the Scarab is 23% slower at a top speed of 40.8 MPH at 7,520 RPM obtaining 2.2 MPG. Best cruise for the 242 achieves 3.31 MPG at 32.2 MPH while the Scarabs best is 2.8 MPG at 28.3 MPH.

I wish I had some comparison numbers for a Scarab 195. But knowing the power plants I would certainly pick the Yamaha 190/195 over the Scarab.

I do not understand. My perspective has always been that the Rotax / BRP drives quote unrealistic horsepower figures and underperform on the water?

That is true from what I know, too. But all marketing BS aside, it comes down to Rotax 1.5 and Yamaha 1.8 producing similar power in equivalent configurations. The Rotax IS A MARVEL, in my view. Many people including myself also like the sound of the 3 cyl better.

That said, you know what boat I bought.

@swatski, so the engines are a marvel but the jet drive or hull design reduce performance compared to Yamaha?

Thanks a lot for you input! we willed our an application and got approved for a loan. We close tomorrow on the boat. We bought the 195 200hp. We are worried and more so concerned on if the 200hp will hold on with say 4-6 people and MAYBE every now and then pull a tube or ski. We're not huge watersports people. Some have told us to close our eyes and buy a 250hp but that ends up being a $10k difference.

We were also about to buy the Yamaha sx 195 vortex but sitting inside both boats the scarab was so much more comfortable seating wise and space.

I believe so. If you look at their performance in skis, the big engine Doos and Yammies are neck and neck.

There is no question in my mind that Yamaha jet boats are the best value on the planet. I think they are WAY ahead of the curve at this point. Making jet propulsion work in a boat, as in a serious traditional family/water sports bowrider and not a bathtub toy, is a daunting challenge. Yamaha boats have never been known for superior trim, but I feel very strongly that the other manufactures have a lot of big, challenging issues to catch up, overall.

I am sure you will enjoy the 200 HP Scarab 195. I would expect a Yamaha 190 to out perform it. So 6 adults would be a stretch.
