Really, I did.

I've had my vehicles covered by USAA for 15+ years, back in the day their prices couldn't be beat for me. Then they started farming out recreational vehicles to other carriers, so I had vehicles through them, camper was Progressive, boat with Geico...
I was impressed with Geico when my boat got hit on the interstate last year and they stuck with it until they got full settlement from the other persons insurance and gave me my deductible back.

My Camper was coming due so I called Geico to get a quote, $140 a year cheaper than Progressive with more coverage, then she asked if I wanted a quote for my truck and wife's van, I thought "sure, can't hurt". $650 a year less!! And it has a little better coverage!

So, I saved about $800 a year with that 15 minute phone call, plus it's finally all with one carrier, I forgot about my house insurance I should get them to quote me that as well:)

Sounds exactly like the commercial. ;)

It does pay to shop around for insurance every once in a while just to keep them honest.

I'm having the same thoughts with USAA. I've been with them since 1999. Everything just keeps going up up up. I made some changes to my homeowners a few years ago when it hit 4K a year. Changing some coverages and other minor tweaks, I got it down to about 2800. It's right back to 4K.

I need to make a change. My problem is USAA doesn't do new homeowners policies in FL anymore unless you're stationed here. So if I get out, I can't come back.

I have been with USAA insurance for all my needs since 1989. When they farmed out their boating insurance to Progressive I ended up moving to AllState for their coverage to Bimini. When I bought my Cobalt I decided to shop around for boat insurance and through a local agent I decided to go with Traveler's Insurance. While discussing the boat insurance he gave me a quote to switch my auto's and home from USAA to Traveler's. I was shocked, the auto's were only a minor saving per year but the homeowners insurance was $1100 a year cheaper through Traveler's. So now all my insurance is under the big red umbrella.

I shopped auto insurance heavily when my girls started turning 16. I had everyone quote my wife and I for a good comparison to current rates and then add on the young driver. All of the quote were very comparable from the many companies I checked except GEICO. They were far cheaper with just my wife and I and much, much more expensive when you added on a 16 year old.

I believe their business model is they want low risk drivers with a good record. Its a good business model. They offer cheap insurance but if you have anything high risk like a poor record or kids, or whatever, I suspect their rates will be high. Get in an accident where you are at fault, I bet the rates blow up.

FWIW, I stayed with State Farm.

That sounds similar to what my agent told me about Traveler's. Traveler's rates are low to high credit rated low risk customers (luckily I'm one), otherwise their rates are high enough to make it unattractive. I figured if something serious happened that caused my Traveler's rates to jump, then I would move to another insurance company with lower rates but for now I will enjoy my savings.

haha, I guess the moral of the story is, once I get rid of these high risk kids, then I get to shop for insurance again :) Interesting to hear about Travelers too though.

Pretty much sums up my experiences. I've been with geico since 97, but now that my kids are on it, it has gone up dramatically. I've got 1/2 of my vehicles on state farm right now and plan on doing alot of comparison shopping real soon.

I'm with usaa for house and cars, not boat. I figured a few years ago when I started seeing TV adds it was not good. Either they would up rates to cover advertising costs or they were in trouble and needed more customers. Never made sense to me to advertise on secular menus when you have to be military or family to military unless they have dropped that requirement.

I live in Florida and a lot of ins. Companies were dropping fla. So I was scared to leave usaa they quite picking up fla. Houses but did not dump me. Some people at work were being cancelled from other ins co. It was quite a few years ago back when we were getting a lot of hurricanes. I think it mite have been a ploy to force fla. To change ins laws as the state did change a lot of regulations in favor of ins not home owners. My deductible goes from 500 up to 2500 if damage is from hurricane

We just switched all our insurances to All State. I has been with American Family for 15 years. I will save a total of $1700 a year total. Boat now down to $470.
