So I beached the boat today and think I might have messed up the impeller. Ordered a new one, but am wondering if I am going to need any special tools to swap it?
I just use a pipe wrench to hold the shaft tool, and a large adjustable wrench on the impeller. It would be best to use the proper sized box end wrench on the impeller, but I can't remember the size.
If it's stuck, put the whole pump in the freezer for 20 minutes. Pull it out and hit just the impeller with a torch just to warm it up a little. It should break easily. Make sure you use plenty of anti-seize on the shaft threads and new impeller before installing. Grease the splined driveshaft end before reinstalling pump.
Do not rev your engine out of the water after installing the impeller. This can cause it to back off and slide up the drive shaft if not properly torqued.

There is no need to pull the cone when changing the impeller.
Not difficult to do, and may be a good idea to inspect the pump bearing - inside the cone. But - it does not need to be done in order to change impellers. There are no gaskets or seals between the pump segments. Some use a bit of pure silicone (I usually do).
