Got my old engine out of my SX230 and checked the play in the shaft and there quite a bit. Anyone know what is normal, I have a feeling that 1/4" is to much.

Been doing some research, am I correct in saying that the bearings are mounted in rubber? Also the pumps are removed and I'm thinking that could contribute to the play.

I’m not sure if 1/4” is too much, but it seems that amount of play might be fine.

The shaft in my bad engine ended up moving forward about 1”, and that was enough to trash the crank case.

I put the pumps back on today and the play went away so I'm hoping the play with the pumps off is normal.

I probably missed this in another thread, but why did you have to take the engine out?

Edit:
I just saw your other thread!

I bought the boat with two seized engines, one of them I was able to free up and get running with out pulling but the other I could not and bought a ski for a donor engine.

Not at the moment, been crazy busy. Retiring tomorrow and in the process of selling our house here and moving to Florida. Once we get settled in I’ll get back into it.
