Yes, it's worth the trip, did it several times. I'm from Erie originally and it is a fun trip. There are some fun beach restaurants (just Google) and it's very clean with nice beaches.
Let me tell you one thing about Lake Erie though. It is the shallowest of all the Great Lakes, at its deepest point it is only 100 ft. I have seen the lake go from dead calm to 6 footers in 20 minutes time, no BS. Just be safe and monitor the weather and your surroundings.

Yeah, that's a smart move. We use to be finished boating on the lake in September.
Also, filing a float plan with the Coast Guard is a good idea.
