Hi!

I’m a new Yamaha boat owner and I have a silly question...

When we’re cruising, I feel like the RPM’a always stay between 5k-7k, it never shifts down (like a car does) - therefore the motor is always really loud.

That hasn’t been my experience in my other 2 boats so I’m hoping something isn’t wrong with this one (altough it is a fresh off the lot 2018).

Is that normal? My friend said it is because these AR’s are like bigger Seadoo’s that stay at a high RPM the whole time - but I’m nervous.

Any feedback would be appreciated. I’ve been nervous to take it back out til I find out if that’s normal or if I’m driving to wrong.

Thanks in advance

Completely normal - throttle controls RPMs directly, there is no transmission to “shift”

There is no transmission, thus no shifting. It is a direct jet.

The drivetrain is like this: engine->impeller shaft->impeller->jet pump housing.

Enjoy your new jet boat!

:Welcome:
Coming from outboards or even I/O's the Yamaha's are louder and you hear the full rev, totally normal. The 190's seem louder than the rest of the lineup too. I've been trying slowly every year to take care of some sound deadening but theres no magic bullet to quiet down the entire boat. Enjoy your new boat, your friend is right its like a wave runner that you can take 7 on.

I dont know of any boat that shifts to lower rpms, whether it is a outboard, sterndrive, inboard, etc.......
Jet boats tend to have a higher rev limit, when most sterndrives rev to 5500 or so wot.

Ok, thank you!!
So I shouldn’t be worried if I stay at a high RPM for a long time while we’re cruising?!
