Trying to decide new 2020 242 limited S or purchase a 2016 242 limited S. The 16' only has 20 hrs on it and it is mint condition. Does anyone think the YAMAHA incentives right now are really that good to buy new? Would buy a newer boat or older one.?

4 years depreciation would be nice. Any mods on the used boat? Money wised, used is almost always the better deal.

I think one needs more info here. What’s the difference in purchase price? Does the 2016 have any warranty?

20 hours on a '16? Sounds nice on paper. Also sounds like high maintenance issues could be in your future. Vehicles of any type will fare better over four years with regular usage vs. four years of sitting. That rule is even truer with boats and their exposure to the elements. If you go for the '16, use some of the saved money to pay for a detailed mechanical once-over by neutral party.

I would also say that, due to current economic conditions, boat dealerships are salivating for business, and boat manufactures need to move units that were built pre-pandemic. You've got a huge opportunity to nail down an extremely good price on a new boat with a extended warranty.

The 16 has had yearly service documented. Only mod is thrust vectors. All service was done by Yamaha dealer. I have to check on the warranty through Yamaha since it.was a 16 leftover purchased in 17. It's.a.hard decision.

Can't get a Yamaha extended warranty.
Spoke with local dealer on new AR240 purchase. They aren't wanting to throw in anything extra at all. I asked about a cover, no. Asked if Yamaha or them would throw in a extended warranty, no. I don't really see much of deal they are having like others have posted. Maybe its just the dealer I spoke to. I was told Yamaha' recent promotion has gone better than they anticipated since the factory is closed. The 20' also listed at 58k and the dealer says that's with the 2k off. I didn't read it that way. Seriously considering the used boat for a better price since I've read there are not many issues with these boats.

That's just the dealer - call everyone within 200 miles you can find. We bought ours new, signed in late Jan, in March Yamaha threw in a free YES 2 year just for the hell of it. Your dealer is being a d*ck thinking he's got a live one on the hook. I dealt with five dealerships before my local would come down on price. At one point the local guy said "yeah we can't go meet the $1300 lower that the other dealership is offering, but we're local." and I told him "for 1300 I'll drive my boat 1.5 hours both ways 25x and still come out better..." Suddenly they had a change of heart.

Sales people are like cobras - you can get them to dance, but don't take you eyes off them.

Btw - throw out your location, there's probably some members that can recommend a decent dealership.

I'm in Ohio where's your dealer? There's only 3-4 dealers that I know of. I'll go to.michigan or Indiana. Until the lock down is over most are closed.

I have found similar in my hunt so far. Some dealers offer nothing and do nothing, and another dealer will throw in a lot of extras but not budge on price. Very variable. I have searched up to 8 hours away from my home.

It’s too late to snag the April offers so waiting to see what May brings!

Central Wisconsin. I'd recommend either Skipper Buds or Team Winnebagoland, both of them are big time Yamaha dealers.

Its not the buyers market like one would think. I'm sorry giving me a safety kit they sell for $80 or $90 is something I can go to Wally Word and purchase separately for $30 or $40 is not giving much. This experience is definitely not like buying a new car (throwing in a ceramic clear coat protection) rebates etc... I told the salesman today that if he checks with his boss and make things sweeter I wouldn't be purchasing this year and I would just wait it out. Its my money and if they want it they can work for it.

Are you a cash deal or do you already have financing lined up? If you're counting on them for financing they may not think you're serious yet.

Try shooting them a semi-lowball, but negotiable price. If you come within a couple grand, try to get the 10 hour service and a mooring cover thrown in. If your salesman is being the dick, you might try asking him his hours, then calling on his off day to talk to the GM. Explain you're a serious buyer, here's where your at, and ask them if they want to move a unit today or not. "I've got $1000 down today and financing will be lined up by next week" usually is a good motivator to push them from trying to make a bunch of margin to just moving a unit. Call in the last couple hours of the day at the end of the week if possible so the GM's in a good mood and already has his weekly sales numbers in.

@anmut I did call to Winnebagoland and they were gonna deal but I just hate to drive 12 hours away only to have to local dealer not want to service under warranty. They already told that if I purchased a Yamaha from another dealer they would service it because they had to, but they would'nt guarantee when it would get serviced....'could be a month, there is a wait list". I got the hint and just walked out.

My local dealer said the same thing. Ask them "Oh wait, so should I expect Yamaha to have a bunch of issues then? Maybe I should go look at another type of boat if it's going to be in for service all the time." It's pretty funny watching them try to back pedal that statement.

We know these boats are solid, and if you have issue, you can raise hell with Yamaha corporate.

Also, if you had a chance to save money on driving 12 hours, with oil below $20 a barrel, NOW IS THE TIME. :) Bonus - if you come up and purchase from TW, I'll meet you out in Waupaca on your way home!

@anmut Yes I did that already. I had my son call and he spoke to another sales person. Best they would do is the "Safety kit" nothing else. Yes I have cash and a finance back-up (not threw Yamaha) so it just goes to prove they dont want/need the business. I'm calling MIchigan dealers Friday and maybe driving to Ann Arbor for the hell of it if I can get appt. on Saturday. I guess they are not supposed to be selling boats up there.

I didn't get a whole lot of extras when I bought my boat but I did get the nice cover with it.

I sent you a private message.

Hands down get the 2016. I bought an 08 sx230 in 2013 that had 27 hours on it.....haven't had a problem yet. Let someone else eat the depreciation.

Ohio? I recall there is a dealer around Port Clinton that was pricing really well last August. We almost made the 5 hour run up there to buy.

Its kind of the wrong time of year for deals too don't forget. Especially up here, its barely warm enough for boating. In a few weeks the heat will bring the buyers out. Not that it helps you now but I bought after Labor Day, got $5k off a current year boat.
