Took boat to keys and during cruising speed got an overheat alarm. Not happy. This happened during our last outing. Took to dealer and they found no issues. Tech tested on lake at wot and all was good. After the alarm cleared it worked perfect for rest of trip. So weird and frustrating. Only thing I can think of is both times we have had 4 adults and 4 kids in boat. I'm thinking weight could be an issue? I know it's rated for 8, but you can tell there are times when the engine is pushing hard. FSH 190

Overheat is usually caused by seaweed/grass getting sucked up and clogging the engine water intake. That's what the cleanout is for. It'll take a bit for the engine to cool off even after the clog is cleared. If it's really bad, you'll notice poor acceleration/thrust. You can try putting it in reverse, after you've come to a stop, hit the throttle to chop up the weeds. Sometimes the speedometer will stop working too. Another sign of weed fouling. Reverse will usually clear that up too.
That's the typical if there aren't engine issues.
Again, from my experience.

Both times I thoroughly checked for any weeds and debris and they were clear.

I boat in the keys it is seaweed. A little blocked it. It also takes a little bit of time to cool the engine. It happens often down there. Once I get flow out the pee hole again I just run it with the alarm going off, you can silence the alarm on the conex screen. In neutral, if you have no water out the pee hole that’s the problem.

Wouldn't this be bad for the engine to run with alarm going off?

What the boat ought to have that it does not is a temperature gauge, so you could see what's going on before it overheats. If the debris is small enough it might fall off upon stopping. I've had one overheat event, and it was once enough. long story, but I have now added some temp sensors. There are some threads on how folks have done that.I highly recommend it. I now monitor Water temp, and I also put a sensor externally on the oil filter to give me an idea of Oil temp. Very interesting information.
