Is there a proper or preferred way to route and connect the grounds for 2 batteries? Should all grounds be run to the 1st battery that is in turn grounded to the 2nd battery? Or can grounds be routed to either battery, with batteries grounded to each other?

If Battery two's ground wire is routed to the ground terminal on battery one it doesn't matter you can run ground wire from either as in theory they are all grounded to the same point.
