It's that time of year again for our Sacramento River Run to Joe's Crab Shack. We started off with 9 boats going this year but most have canceled due to work. (Big Chevron project started and they're working 12 hour shifts 13 days straight ) So we're down to 4 boats. Good food, good times, with good people is the plan. I'll post pics

Wow, when is happening? Today?

Sunset on the way back from Joe's. On my favorite slough, Steamboat Slough.

@1rjclark , you have inspired me. My usual crew and I are boating , probably for the last time this season today. We are headed up the delta to old Sacramento and have reservations to eat lunch at Joe's Crab Shack. I wanted to stay the night but the embassy suites on the water is booked for the next few weeks.

I've tried to book a room there but there's no dock access even tho they have a beautiful dock there. If you're looking for a place to stay on the Delta there's the River Boat Queen docked in Old Sacramento. Also the Waterfront Hotel in Stockton. Its sad to hear that this will probably be your last outing for the season. I'm hoping to squeeze out a couple more but I have to knock out the "Honey Do" list first. Safe boating for you & yours and have fun.

@Big Shasta, very nice! I plan on enjoying my retirement between up north and the Delta area. If all goes well my pipe laying days will be over in 15 - 20 years. Hopefully closer to 15. Do you know of any boating destinations on the River you can share with us?

No, Sorry, I left there in 1985 at 15 years old. I loved the country of north cali but I don't miss the California politics.....Even though I was too young to know the difference, I remember my parents bitching constantly at that state.

Here are a few pics from yesterday's trip to old Sacramento. We had a blast and they got to see things they normally don't like a cable ferry and drawbridge in action but think my crew and I are getting to old to make the round trip in one day anymore. We were on the road for 3 to 4 hours. And on the water for about 6, lunch and dinner took another 2 hours and we walked parts of old town Sacramento for a little over an hour. Besides, After seeing that the nearby shopping center/mall is all but closed my wife is in no rush to return. They are supposed to revitalize it in 2016 though.

@1rjclark , I'm not sure if we are talking about the same hotel and guest dock but the one under the crabshack that extends unde the bridge and In front of the embassy suites is the Sacramento guest dock. It is free during the day (unless you plug into shore power) and runs $1 per foot per night. You can reserve space about a week ahead of time except on Labor Day weekend (they have a western fair and more overnight boaters that weekend than normal so they assign reservations by lottery that week). You can also take your chances by not reserving at all and getting one of the spots that can't be reserved (I think they limit reservations to about half of the dock bit I'm not sure).

The place I'd like to stay at is the westing just before old Sacramento, they have a Scott's seafood restaurant on premise but in all the years I've boated by there they have never opened their private docks for use. I've pulled up and tied off only to find that the door at the top of the stairs was locked so I could not visit the hotel or restaurant. I'm guessing it is a permitting issue (they don't have one and can't get one) that someone didn't think to clear before they constructed the dock.

@Ronnie, I was mistaken about which docks are not open. It's the docks at the Westin as you stated. Where did you launch? Did you takethe Sacramento River all the way there or take the SteamBoat Slough short cut. Takes me 2 hours from Rio Vista public boat launch to Old Sacramento, via Steamboat Slough. Sounds like you guys had a blast!
