First off, instead of likes let’s see how many “I told you so’s” we can get on this thread.

Second, if you have a scupper below the waterline replace it know. Do not wait. I literally had min, it was scary. Its about $100 and 2 hours of labor. You do not want to be in this situation.

Third, shame on Yamaha. I love this boat but that is ridiculous. This should have been recall. They put people in jeopardy.

Now the story.
On sand bar, all set up. Chairs, umbrellas, coolers all on the beach. Notice bulge running every 5 min for about 20 seconds. Go to back of boat, hear a humming sound, figure out it’s not electronic (I believe it was water leaking in on cracked scupper). I reach down to touch the flap on the scupper. Feel it break and water gushing.
Command all to pack up ASAP and get in boat. Probably took three min. Before pulling off open the engine hatch, water right at bottoms of motors. Hall ass to marina, tie up, have daughter jump in water and press towel against scupper, sprint to truck, back in, load boat, pull forward. Watch water pour out of scupper for what felt like 5 min while apologizing to several people for buzzing through no wake zone (not trying to exaggerate). Adrenaline dump.

Ok...I TOLD YOU SO. Just kidding glad all worked out. For anybody else in this predicament I would consider stuffing something in the open hole before heading to safety as the bilge pump won't keep up with a 2 inch hole in the hull.

Yeah. I thought of that about half way back to marina, overall about 3 min ride I was moving fast. Figured at speed on plane less water would enter maybe even get sucked out some. Figured don’t stop just plug at marina.

You are correct on bilge, that thing did not stand a chance. A 1.5 inch hole 2 feet under water is about 70 gallons a min.

Are there years for bad scuppers or are all POS.
If it’s plastic it’s a POS but newer boats scupper is above water line, 2011 or newer.
I would still replace with ss.

I peeked under my transom while swimming behind my boat, and can say if my scupper failed it would most definitely take on water. It is right at the water line and just slight movement puts it completely under the water line.
I replaced it anyway with stainless

I don't wakeboard but I would expect when weighted down with ballast bags even the newer boat's scupper valves are below the water line.

good job making it back unscathed!!

Is there a particular stainless model that yall recommend? Are they universal or is there a specific size?

Wow you got lucky! Had you not known what to look for, you’d have been in big trouble.

Mine broke off in my hand when I was changing it and all I did was put my hand around it! The previous owner had me stop in the incline of the ramp during the sea trial so he could pull the plug and dump the water. I was like, umm, there’s not supposed to be that much water in there...

I'm a new owner here so please take it easy on me.... but.... What's a scupper? What does it do? Where is it located? Should I replace the factory Yamaha one with a better aftermarket one?

My friend sx230 broke the scupper in the boat side. The pipe was hanging low and draining water past the flapper into the bilge. We tied it up high and i recommended to replace the hull side asap!

I dont have a better shot of it, but its where most of the compartments drain out of the back of the boat. On the 2019 ar195 its just below the ladder. Think of it like a little check valve, water out, no water in.

The scupper drains the water that gets inside your cockpit, rain, people dripping water, anything above deck, I'm not familiar with the 2018 but you should have a drain opening just below your engine hatch with a hose through your engine compartment leading out to the back of the boat,

after 2010 it really wasn't as much of an issue as the exit is above the water line,
2009 and previous the drain exit was below the water and a plastic fitting, if it cracked or broke you were immediately getting water in the bilge of the boat,

In the FAQ section we have a couple write ups about replacing it for the older models,

It’s the white drain above your rudder.

Thank you all. Very informative. I kinda assumed that any water that made it's way into the boat was directed down to the bilge pump area and remove that way. I'll definitely look for the scupper on my boat next time I take it out.

Today almost had the exact same thing on a first run with new to us 2007 sx210.
On the lake first part went fine - on shore anchor wife mentioned the bilge kicked on twice.
I looked in the rear hatch and saw a trickle reached down to trace the source and the scupper inside blew off and water gushed.
I flipped into the water blocked the scupper opening with my hand and abs my son for a plastic bag. With a better seal and time to think we created a plug from a swim noodle - now affectionly called the black and purple butt plug...
That worked we made it hauling ass to the boat ramp - at speed it seems to be in a vacuum or at least lower pressure
Figured the plug might be out at the ramp but it wasn't so we loaded and breathed a sigh of relief.

I'm replacing that and the 90 3/4" fittings all with SS

Yamaha is completly stupid to put a 2" plastic fitting below the water line.
BTW this boat was serviced by Yamaha dealer every year since new...
