Scupper failed........on the water.

Quick thinking. I agree with your disdain for Yamaha engineers. This should have been a recall.

First off, instead of likes let’s see how many “I told you so’s” we can get on this thread.

Second, if you have a scupper below the waterline replace it know. Do not wait. I literally had min, it was scary. Its about $100 and 2 hours of labor. You do not want to be in this situation.

Third, shame on Yamaha. I love this boat but that is ridiculous. This should have been recall. They put people in jeopardy.

Now the story.
On sand bar, all set up. Chairs, umbrellas, coolers all on the beach. Notice bulge running every 5 min for about 20 seconds. Go to back of boat, hear a humming sound, figure out it’s not electronic (I believe it was water leaking in on cracked scupper). I reach down to touch the flap on the scupper. Feel it break and water gushing.
Command all to pack up ASAP and get in boat. Probably took three min. Before pulling off open the engine hatch, water right at bottoms of motors. Hall ass to marina, tie up, have daughter jump in water and press towel against scupper, sprint to truck, back in, load boat, pull forward. Watch water pour out of scupper for what felt like 5 min while apologizing to several people for buzzing through no wake zone (not trying to exaggerate). Adrenaline dump.
@@Ajax.....heart stopper. Yes, Yamaha has a length video tracing their heritage and commitment to quality and life .....they should buy a couple of thousand scuppers and replace them. Why the H3LL are boats leaving the factory like this now?????

That's using your old noodle!
I keep duct tape on the boat for potential issues like that. Glad you made it back ok.

Is this issue just with the older boats or is it all of them? Is the scupper on my 2018 a piece of crap too?

We've just had our first almost sinking of a 240 series boat due to a broken plastic scupper. I ordered my SS replacement today!

Yamaha puts these plastic ones in, and their service manual probably should say "at 4 years replace plastic scupper". That's about how long one can safely say the plastic will last. Not a recall issue in my mind, but certainly an item they shouldn't cut corners on!

Every Yamaha has a plastic scupper (4 cycle models)....if yours hasn't been replaced and its over 4 years old....you have begun playing Russian roulette...

@Julian ....very wise advice. On The yamaha website there is a lengthy video extolling the virtues of the Yamaha founders and how these traditions are carried on today. Since an OEM part they install contributes to the sinking of their product maybe their customer - family centric motto could include at least a mail-in replacement program or free replacement for their product. This IMO starts to get into the realm of public safety. An offshore failure could have deadly consequences. The automotive industry has been punished for far less. This is truly shameful behaviour on Yamah's part IMO.

I bet flex tape will work well too. I have noodles on the boat I can wedge into any future home.

Today almost had the exact same thing on a first run with new to us 2007 sx210.
On the lake first part went fine - on shore anchor wife mentioned the bilge kicked on twice.
I looked in the rear hatch and saw a trickle reached down to trace the source and the scupper inside blew off and water gushed.
I flipped into the water blocked the scupper opening with my hand and abs my son for a plastic bag. With a better seal and time to think we created a plug from a swim noodle - now affectionly called the black and purple butt plug...
That worked we made it hauling ass to the boat ramp - at speed it seems to be in a vacuum or at least lower pressure
Figured the plug might be out at the ramp but it wasn't so we loaded and breathed a sigh of relief.

I'm replacing that and the 90 3/4" fittings all with SS

Yamaha is completly stupid to put a 2" plastic fitting below the water line.
BTW this boat was serviced by Yamaha dealer every year since new...
At speeds the water is actually sucked out of the boat. On my close call a lot of the water had left the boat until I slowed back down

Do you guys have links to suggested replacement scuppers, and how to do it?

I want to replace mine on 2009 Yamaha 232 Limited S but all stainless ones say nit for use beliw waterline. Dies that matter?

The stainless says that because stainless does not work underwater--it need exposure to air to allow the chemical reaction that protects the metal. So that is why it says not for below the waterline. I would still put it on. You will just need to inspect it periodically, which you should do anyway.
