I have a shifting problem on my LX on one bucket. If the shifter is in F and I shift to N or to R, the bucket moves down and is tight in place. Now, with the bucket down, if I shift from R to F the bucket doesn't move up, it stays down but is suddenly loose enough to move up and down by hand.

Before I change the cable for this side is it possible that something else is causing this problem? I'm surprised that the shifting works one way but not the other--I would think that if the cable was broken it wouldn't work at all--but I don't know.

It sounds like a broken cable to me. That can happen if the cable is tight and you put too much pressure on it. The salt water will do that once it breaches the small black rubber boots.

@Gym would the cable still be able to shift one way if it is broken?

Make sure the cable is attached at both ends before buying a new one. It is most likely broken, but could have also come loose from the bucket or shift lever. That would also cause the same symptoms (push but not pull)

I'm guessing the hull detailing just took a back seat. If you can move the reverse bucket up and down easily and the shifter at the helm does not move, your cable is broken.

The cable is connected at the shifter--I pulled the whole unit out and it was intact. The cable is also connected to the top of the bucket. I guess I will pull out the clean-out tray tomorrow to see if I can find anything that is obviously wrong inside.

The shifter will move back and forth without a problem it's the bucket that won't move when the shifter goes from R to F, although it will move from F to R. I have to fix this problem first since I could sell the boat without detailing it, but I can't sell it without fixing the cable.

Sounds like a broken cable to me.

You won't see any problem by looking at the cable. The cable has a thick sheath that contains the tiny little metal cable inside. If you can get two people and have one person watch the cable end at the bucket while you shift.

Sounds like a broken cable to me too. But to verify, you could Try pulling on one end of the cable while someone else pulls on the other. If both ends pull away from each other it's broken somewhere in the middle.
