Went out to exercise the motors on my 212SS. Started getting smoke from starboard engine. Started squeaking like a bearing was bad and shut off. Let it sit for a couple hours. Tried again and no problem in first minute but after that some smoke, sweaking and then the motor stalled again. Does this sound like a bearing issue? Compression is perfect on motor.

Can you tell where the smoke is coming from? What does the smoke smell like? Electrical, oily, plastic/rubber? Were you running water through the engine while exercising? I’d start with pulling the impeller/shaft and running it without to eliminate excessive drag from the impeller.

need more info but if it is in the hull and behind the engine it may be the intermediate bearing went bad and water rusted the bearings when it was sitting.

Unfortunately, I shut it off the first time in a panic and didn’t see where it was coming from. I’m afraid to let it run long enough again to start seeing smoke.. It was a plastic/rubber sort of smell. I could tell that something behind the motor was making it difficult for the motor to run. I’ll take out the impeller tomorrow afternoon and try again.

check the intermediate bearing behind the engine this one was blown out by over greasing it but when they go they must be replaced .

Well I believe it’s the intermediate bearing. Please see pics of starboard and port bearings. How difficult to change myself if I’m mechanically inclined? Do I have to completely remove the motor? Any instructions on this? Any tips? Thanks!

I move the engines forward buy disconnecting the motor mounts and a few hoses also do a search on adding gear lube to your intermediate bearings and pump..
