Very important no nonsense information when deciding what aftermarket steering system to purchase. Cobra jet steering has a system to meet your needs.
Yamaha has several newer style jet boats equipped with an articulating keel. We add indicators in the name to make you aware of their compatibility to indicate what version will work with your particular boat. The indicator “ AK”in the name means it is for boats with articulating keels, “AK-19” means those systems are compatible with the boats built from 2019 and newer as those have the articulating keel and the new nozzle and reverse bucket design that began in 2019 thus AK-19.

The boat hulls have two different types of Articulating keels so when ordering for a single engine boat you will be informed that it is for a single engine only and there will be no twin engine set offered likewise for the twin engine systems there will be no single engine set offered.

If there is no designation it indicates the system is compatible with all NON articulating keel models, “prior to 2015 on the 24-foot models”, “prior to 2016 on the 19-foot models”, “prior to 2017 on the 21-foot models”

For example, the “super ultimate system” no designation in the name so it fits ALL Yamaha jet boats single engine and twin-engine versions prior to the above-mentioned model year for each hull size and both single engine and twin-engine versions are offered. Once we get to the AK and AK-19 models they require a designation for twin engine systems as those are not cross compatible. The twin version will say twin engine.

Now second example, let’s say the system is a super ultimate AK-19 That would be for a 2019 or newer boat however there is NO twin-engine system indicator so it is for the single engine 19 foot only.

There will often be upgrades or upgraded levels for each of the systems. That information will be available when and where you view the system information.

Not sure what year your boat is? It is easy to confirm the year of your boat, it is the last two digits of your hull ID number. It will be on your registration as well. Also, when you place an order, we always ask for the boat make, model and year so we can check on the parts you ordered and notify you if there is any question before shipping the order.

Next if you are not sure if your boat has an articulating keel, here are pictures of both.

Single engine articulating keel started in 2016- twin engine 24 foot in 2015- and 21-foot twin engine in 2017.

First let us address the twin engine Yamaha articulating keel jet boats. From 2015 and newer on the 24 foot boats and 2017 and newer on the 21 foot boats Both models use the same Super Magnum AK systems.
Super magnum ak system on a customers 24 foot boat= 1579192843643.png note second tie rod and V configuration of the fins way above the rudder.
The nozzles were redesigned in 2019 on all the Yamaha jet boats. So we have systems modified to fit the original nozzles the new style nozzles and the articulating keel models both single engine and twin engine. these are super magnum AK-19 systems 19 indicates the first model year of the new nozzles.

And now the latest deluxe version with top fins for huge slow speed steering improvements as well as a modified fin bracket to produce a planing effect for improved hole shots and provide a more stable ride in chop.
Top fins are designed to provide extra steering control only when the hull is off plane, when the hull is on plane the top of the super fins as well as the entire inner top fin is up out of the water!
1583601723813.png and another super magnum AK-19+1583775660140.png super magnum ak-19 deluxe version for the 27 foot models 1598144902809.png 1598145021695.png . recent picture of super magnum ak-19 deluxe with ak fangs on a new Yamaha 252SDcustomers boat 252SD super mag ak-19 deluxe with ak fangs.jpg

All the newer model twin engine Jet boats have a large keel down the center of the hull, this keel acts like a fixed rudder to keep the boat tracking straight to help guide it on plane.
The down side to this is ,the keel wants to keep the boat going straight even when you want it to turn, the faster you go the more it resists turning.
Yamaha added a rudder to the back of the keel to help with the steering , it's a fairly large rudder but it still leaves a lot to be desired .
Also this rudder causes a lot of resistance in the helm so Yamaha uses a rack and pinion steering helm to allow the steering wheel to turn easier however this is a trade off as it requires twice the steering wheel travel.
A full turn to the left or right from center on a regular helm was about 1/4 turn, it is now 1/2 turn , so from full right all the way to full left is about 1 full rotation of the wheel.
Simply put its geared down making it feel easier to turn.
The increased work load has not changed and it is tied into just one nozzle, thus placing all that extra resistance on one side and all on one cable.
Although the nozzles are very rugged and the steering can take the load we believe it only makes sense to balance out this work load sharing it between the two nozzles and cables for added longevity improved reliability and redundancy?

The extra tie rod also removes the nozzle play and allows you to easily set a slight tow in on the steering to provide straight tracking at speed.
Even with the rudder added to the regular steering nozzles if you rapidly decelerate during a turn you can completely lose your steering control , if you own one of these boats you probably already experienced this.

I call it off power steering and you will gain off power steering with several of the cobra systems . Even with the factory rudder, if you are rapidly decelerate while turning people report losing all steering control . People also report a large bleed off of speed while attempting to make high speed turns. All this can be disappointing and even dangerous during water sport activities or in heavy traffic areas.
Our Super Magnum A K and our Super Ultimate A k steering systems address these issues and our AK Mega fang plus upgrade on either system will make you think you have a different boat. Steering at all speeds and off power, enhanced turning capabilities with much less bleed off in the turns.
Super Ultimate AK system on a customers boat, big difference is these are larger , spring loaded and can be set to retract at speed or stay down all the time.

Next is reverse control or lack thereof.
The keel and rudder provide very little reverse steering. This may not be your primary concern but it is important to be able to back your boat with accuracy, predictability and power. Especially when dealing with off loading your boat or in heavy traffic areas as well as wind and currents effecting your reverse control.

We can provide you with real reverse steering and reverse control , with twin engine boats turning the back of the boat sideways in place is accomplished by staggering the controls, this feature is already in your stock twin engine twin throttle jet boat, try it yourself .
With our mega fang plus upgrade you can enhance that feature as many people have reported along with more usable reverse thrust for better stopping power and better control in reverse against wind and current and heavy boat traffic areas.

At Cobra Jet Steering LLC we have been fixing the steering deficits on jet boats and p w c s with affordable patented retrofit-able steering systems since 2001. We build steering based on our experience and customer input.

Our Super Magnum A K adjustable effect steering system designed for the twin engine articulating keel Yamaha jet boats addresses the steering shortcomings at ALL SPEEDS! Not just at IDLE speed. AND YES OFF POWER STEERING ALSO ! And lets not forget water sport activities need that extra steering response and control as does rough water conditions and heavy boat traffic areas.

The Super Magnum A K system provides instant steering response to the helm so completely that you may forget you are driving a jet boat.
This system also addresses the uneven work load of the original factory steering system by adding in a second tie rod to balance out the steering providing a push/pull force when turning in either direction. This also adds in redundancy to your system.

We position specially designed 6061 t6 aircraft aluminum steering fins off to the side of each nozzle directly in the flow of water as it passes the hull for more balanced and effective steering in a V configuration without creating huge obstructions hanging way down or all over the back of the boat!
Once again providing more control with less obstructions than other systems.
We also provide the option of a conservative set of A K fangs that mount on each steering fin to provide some power steering and some improved reverse influence at a very modest price, OR you can choose the MEGA FANG PLUS SYSTEM for the MAXIMUM effect!

This system provides improved reverse control by channeling the water as it exits the reverse opening of the steering nozzles. This channeled force will move your boat around while backing like never before, customers have described it as good and even better than a prop boat for reverse steering and it will not require any special training or even practice to operate.
If you have operated prop boats in the past you will enjoy having reverse steering like it is supposed to steer.

Additionally the Mega Fang plus enhance both reverse and forward steering.
The Mega Fang plus system was designed to corral and use more of the enhanced reverse thrust for improved stopping power and better power when backing of the trailer or lift as well as improving the stopping power of the reverse thrust when you need to stop quickly.
The mega Fang plus upgrade also provides a nice power steering effect by extending forward of the nozzle pivot point to actually reduce the work load of your steering system.
And now it's 2020 so we have some upgrades to offer for the magnum AK and AK-19 customers past and present in the area of upgrades to current systems or upgrade levels for the new customers.
First on both the versions of super magnum steering you can obviously upgrade to the super fins, however now you can also upgrade to ad the top fins to both systems and you can upgrade to add the plaining surface fin brackets , these upgrades can be done together or separately, simply contact me directly for more information.
So when it comes to choosing steering for your Yamaha articulating keel twin engine jet boat you can SPEND the MOST MONEY or GET THE MOST for your MONEY it's your call! Each year jet boats are filling the boating requirements of more and more people, and we are meeting their requirements for more steering response and control.

Next let us discuss the Cobra Super Ultimate Steering System for all Yamaha single and twin engine jet boats prior to the articulating keel models as well as our newest version the Super Ultimate A K steering for the 2015 to 2018 models with twin engines with articulating keels and the latest SUPER ULTIMATE AK-19+ for 2019 and newer twin engine articulating keel boats as well as Super Ultimate ak-19 system for the single engine 2019 and newer models.

The Super Ultimate system is our best selling most popular steering system . Now we have it for the entire lineup of Yamaha jet boats and we have upgrades available as well.
You have the basic system or the newest with a larger top fin and the option of a plaining surface side force stabilizer , these upgrades can be added individually just like the super magnum upgrades. So there is the super fins , the top fin, and the plaining side force stabilizer now available. Here is the latest SUPER ULTIMATE AK-19 DELUXE1584906165786.png
Twin engine= 1579196265481.png single engine= 1579196433345.png twin with mega fang plus=1581896104203.png

Single engine super Ultimate AK with new version of the mega fang plus =1583601921817.png the lower fang clears the rudder and keel. you may also wish to upgrade to the new side force stabilizer that also provides a plaining surface on AK and AK-19 models= note AK 19 models are not compatible with mega fangs.1583602104729.png
The Super Ultimate steering is unique because it incorporates spring loaded, adjustable fins for varying influence that can be changed to meet the requirements of the boat operator even if those requirements change from time to time.
This adjustment on the twin engine boats each fin is independently adjustable.
Also these fins can be set to stay down all the time at all speeds or set to rise up at speed if you choose. So when you add our The Super Ultimate system it allows you to decide what it does and how it does it.
There are Super Ultimate Systems compatible with all single engine Yamaha jet boats , Twin engines up to the model year 2018.
Twin engine 24 foot model years 2015 through 2018 are covered by our new Super Ultimate A K system or our Super Magnum A K system. For 2019 and newer twin engine models the Super Magnum AK-19 steering systems are currently available .
These are specially designed and include the second tie rod for balance .
All Super Ultimate steering is made 3/16 thick laser cut 6061- T6 aluminum. This material provides excellent strength , durability and effectiveness without creating any unnecessary drag on the system .
They are also compatible with the MEGA FANG plus for power steering / power stopping / Excellent reverse control & off power steering.
The Ultimate steering system has so many options and features built in that nothing on the market can compare with it. It is The only system that does it your way at your level even if that changes from time to time.
Coupled with the Mega fang plus you can steer a 24 foot non rudder equipped Yamaha jet boat in an S turn while rapidly decelerating from a planning speed.
For a jet boat with no additional rudder just the nozzles turning, the old rule is no thrust no steering but that goes out the window with our systems installed.
So steering the boat in an S turn off power was totally unheard of until we came along and changed how jet boats handle !

Very important no nonsense information when deciding what aftermarket steering system to purchase continued.

So now we will take a look at the COBRA VIPER system because people seem to get addicted to this one on the 19 foot boats.
Obviously we have one for each style , keel setups / non keel setups / early nozzles or late model nozzles.
Note mega fang plus upgrade is available for all vipers As is the top fang upgrade . Note the new 2019 and newer nozzles are NOW compatible with the VIPER AK-19+ steering systems. Just as we planned we now have a compatible VIPER available in early 2020. And it is also compatible with the top fangs upgrade just as ALL the VIPERS are.

non keel 1579196727850.png keel model 1579196787689.png top fang upgrade for ALL styles 1579196843877.png

Viper for NON keel boats with both forward fangs and top fangs1579197092590.png. viper ak-19+1583775890609.png and with top fangs1583775948376.png

The VIPER steering has fins that are spaced wider apart for more travel to provide more steering effect while making the fins with less depth, this is very important as single engine boats have the pump and nozzle lower to the ground than a twin engine model.
So rather than have fins hanging down far below the hull we decided to build a planning platform that places the fins away from the lowest part of the boat , This design helps the boat get on plane sooner and stay on plane at a slower speed, it helps stabilize the hull in rough conditions and it improves all the steering from slow and idle speeds in forward and reverse to wide open throttle.
When rapidly decelerating it holds the boats direction nicely and when on plane it also holds the boat on course without constant need for steering input.
All VIPER systems have forward leading front fins similar to fangs improved reverse control and add a power steering effect all in one simple inexpensive system . Adding Extra fangs greatly increases that effect.
Also the VIPERS made for the non keel boats " note the NK or NK2 versions" may also add the Mega fangs plus upgrade for an additional 85 dollars and amp up the steering / stopping / reverse and power steering effects on their viper system that will more than make up for not having the keel. And our newest TOP FANGS are compatible with ALL VIPER MODELS.
The Top Fangs add a larger surface to the viper that is above the bottom of the nozzle so that it works like the Super fins adding more influence when operating in no wake or idle speeds in forward and reverse .
When the boat is on plane this extra influence is not needed and automatically out of the water.
Just one more way we help put you in control and put a smile on your face, it is what we do .

Very important no nonsense information when deciding what aftermarket steering system to purchase continued.

Now we can discuss the 4 tec steering system I build for the Sea Doo / Scarab / Chaparral and Glastron boats using the 4 tec engines and pumps.
This is a very different situation as these boats have an excellent factory reverse system built in.
Once you learn to look at the front of the boat and decide where you want it to point and then just turn the wheel in that direction you can quickly overcome the reverse confusion since the steering in reverse is opposite to what we are accustom to while driving a car or prop boat.
This setup uses a large reverse bucket that is fixed so it does not move with the nozzle.
The nozzle turns inside this reverse bucket redirecting the reverse thrust out different ends of the bucket.
The trick is to provide steering influence in forward to allow the boat to be predictable and responsive without taking away from the reverse handling.
It is important to understand that I drive p w c s that have the same reverse and on my p w c s I can turn on a dime in reverse do a creep forward or backward I have fun with this feature.
So when I built steering for these boats I knew what I needed to do and what I needed to avoid at all cost.
The Sea doo 4 stroke systems have been around for many years I build a system that uses very small number 10 stainless screws to attach it to the nozzle, the system is stainless also, I could build very fancy and expensive systems just look in my patents and see for yourself.
That being said These boats do not need nearly the amount of assistance that the Yamaha setups need, so why mess with success?
I build a system that I even offer to install on your nozzles at no extra charge if you send them to me just in case you get squeamish drilling some very small holes in your nozzles.
So here are the facts ,these nozzles are some of the strongest I have ever dealt with right up there with the Mercury Optimax nozzles.
Drilling a few small holes does nothing to damage or compromise the nozzle , and it WILL NOT affect your WARRANTY! Actually none of my steering products will void your warranty on any make boat.
In all the years I have been doing this I have NEVER seen a single 4 tec nozzle broken by adding these fins even when impacting a solid object., once someone experiences driving with this system on their boat they won't take them off.
Interestingly the nozzles brand new can be purchased for around 70 dollars on line if you ever did need one so no worries .
However I have never heard of anyone needing a new nozzle.
The systems provide instant slow speed response to the helm plus they provide high speed enhancements and the way I designed them they do not interfere with the reverse steering as most of the actual fins are shielded by the reverse hood when backing up so they don't provide interference. They do not cause water spray or rub on the reverse hood either.
The system is made to work on both the single engine or the twin engine setups so it is the same price either way because it is the same system it just mounts differently.
Two on a single engine and one per nozzle on a twin engine.
So if you want some nice predictable and effective all time steering assistance for better all around handling and improved handling during water sports or in rough conditions we have real steering that will spoil you and let others drive with confidence as well.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

So let's talk about exactly what a mega fang plus set is , how it works , what it offers you in the way of features and benefits and why it is so effective on a Yamaha jet boat.

Mega fang plus systems are a larger version of the original fangs, the larger size enhances all the effects.

First the power steering effect.

For centuries mariners employed a simple principal when turning a rudder on a ship .

Rudders create directional drag to change the direction a ship or boat is traveling , drag on the right vessel turns to the right etc. This however does create some resistance and when they used a tiller attached directly to the rudder it could be next to impossible to turn the rudder in bad conditions.

So they discovered if they placed part of that rudder forward of the pivot point the boat traveling through the water could harness some of the energy of the water and use it to help turn the rudder, thus allowing one person to steer the vessel as it greatly reduced the work load required to defeat the water resistance. Mega fangs places small fins under the nozzle where they can capture some of the energy of the boats forward movement thus reducing the amount of effort needed to turn the steering system, especially at higher speed.

It is also important to understand that not only are steering fins, factory rudders etc. responsible for resistance at higher speeds but the jet system itself is a major contributor to this resistance.

The jet pump is producing a huge amount of liquid thrust sufficient to propel your jet boat at some pretty impressive speeds, just imagine the amount of force that is being expelled from the nozzles.

The water jet is trying to keep your steering nozzles perfectly straight, so when you turn the nozzle via the steering wheel you are fighting that force and it is fighting you.

Now the mega fang plus system jumps in to counter a portion of the total resistance allowing for you to turn the wheel easier.

Next we can focus on the enhanced stopping power and reverse thrust for backing off trailers and boat lifts.

The Mega fang plus location and forward positioning also focus the reverse water exiting the bottom of your nozzles. Since Yamaha reverse just shoots the thrust under the nozzle by closing off the water's normal exit out the back and redirecting it under the boat in a forward direction causing the thrust to push the boat in an opposite direction , as the nozzle turns from one side to the other it changes the direction of that thrust supposedly creating a directional steerage however it is usually inadequate for most people.

The Mega Fangs are located on either side of the nozzles reverse water exit , this allows them to direct and focus the thrust giving it more power and more steering effect combined with the steering fins so it now steers in reverse more like a conventional boat .

Now the steering system enhancement.

At planning speeds the Mega fang plus will actually capture water flowing under the nozzle and turn into it using their power steering effect to move the back of the boat sideways as the steering system is also moving the hull .

An example is the steering system is pushing the front of the boat to the right while the Mega fangs are pulling the back of the boat to the left creating a very impressive and effective steering response. Imagine someone paddling a canoe on one side only to get it to change direction while another person in the back paddles backward on the opposite side of the canoe. That is about the best way I can explain it.

So I provide you with all these important features and benefits, I sell the systems for a very competitive price. And I guarantee you will like it or you can return it within the 30 day period for a refund . Remember this is what I do, my goal is to make your boat easy and predictable to operate and make you smile when you get behind the wheel.

If you have any questions regarding any of the new products listed that have not made it to the web site yet please feel free to email me directly
I submitted the information a week ago along with adding different buttons for compatibility like year , model and number of engines in an effort to make it easier to see what works with your particular boat model due to the variety of systems available . The new 2019 boats have a different nozzle and reverse so all compatible systems will include the -19 connotation indicating they are designed for the 2019 and newer models. Here are a few links to posts on this web page that may assist you.

I had started to post this info in another thread, but out of respect to that OP and an attempt to not de-rail that thread but still share my story, I’m putting it here.

Loved the always down aspect on my ‘11 SX210. The steering did feel a little stiffer than stock, but I think that would be expected as you now have additional fins in the water that are used to turn the boat. Love the Cobra system and would still be using it if I hadn’t traded the boat. Lol

And, I still remember @Cobra Jet Steering LLC saving my vacation last year by essentially overnighting parts to my resort last June. Bolts, custom made spacer and a replacement steering nozzle that he just happened to have on the shelf that he acquired somewhere just because he thought it might come in handy. And, he only charged me what he had in it!! Totally awesome support, and even cracked jokes when we spoke on the phone!!

Oh, also worth mentioning, that I wasn’t even his customer. I bought the steering system from a member here and installed on my boat. Before my purchase, I checked with Jeff to make sure it was compatible with my boat. After the purchase he asked me to send him pics of everything I got so he could verify that I had all the right parts. He confirmed and then sent me new installation directions. Then a few weeks later when I broke my steering nozzle through my own ineffective use of locktite, he came through by saving my vacation.

Anyway, very satisfied customer.

I have had similar experience with Cobras, albeit the newest fins along with mega(?) FANGS work fantastic, the fangs offset the heaviness and the steering becomes firm, not heavy.

Just an update on the new SUPER STEERING versions of the Ultimate and Magnum systems I offer for all the various boat models and years, The new super steering has now replaced the original fin designs giving you even more influence at the slow speed end of the steering spectrum in both forward and reverse And off power in rapid deceleration situations without any additional resistance at planning speeds. It's like driving a sports car on a dry road.

Upgraded my Super Magnum AK-19 system to the new Deluxe version this weekend. Install went smoothly. Hope to get out in the next few days to test it out.

Just installed the same Deluxe setup as grywlfbg on my 2019 242SE and have spent a few hours on the water since the install. Steering response at low speeds in our no wake zone and when docking is so much better than stock. Thanks Jeff!

About to take the boat in to the dealer for my first engine service and I wanted to know if anyone here had any warranty void issues with a dealer when you had the steering system installed. The 2019 and newer Yamaha warranty states: "limited warranty will not cover the repair of damages to your Yamaha Boat caused by abuse, alteration, modification, neglect, vandalism, failure to adhere to product capacity information and/or product mainte- nance, care instructions, and/or other items listed below. Examples of damage caused by abuse, alteration, modifications, neglect, vandalism, non-adherence and other items include, but are not limited to the following::
#13. Installation of accessories installed by anyone other than Yamaha or an authorized Yamaha dealer.
# 22. Damage caused by engines, jet pumps or jet pump components, controls, batteries, trailers, electric trolling motors, fish/depth finding devices, canvas, wakeboard tower, other equipment or accessories not manufactured by Yamaha whether or not warranted by other such manufacturer.

I don't have any damage or warranty claims...just taking it in for the post break-in 40hr engine service. Wanted to know anyone has experienced your dealer being a stickler about the aftermarket parts clause and voiding your warranty. Should I bother to put it back to stock before taking it in?

That is a commonly asked question I would guess a search of the site on the federal warranty laws as they apply to aftermarket accessories would reveal many posts and all would have the Federal Magnuson moss warranty act, my understanding of it is basically they factory warranty can not be voided if you add parts to your boat , The manufacturer can refuse to cover a part if the effected part was damaged by the added aftermarket part or by improper installation of the aftermarket part however the manufacturer needs to prove that the after market part caused their part to fail.
This consumer protection law was passed by congress in 1975.
So when people drill holes in their hulls to add accessories for instance it won't void the warranty unless it damages the hull and causes it to fail , crack leak etc or adding a barbecue grill to the swim deck sets the boat on fire it isn't covered, lol. In any case if you drive by the service department of most dealerships you will see boats sitting in the parking lot with aftermarket steering or other modifications.. And remember the warranty will not cover all the damage to your boat from not being able to steer it .

REVERSE CONTROL info including PROP - VS - JET BOAT and new Yamaha nozzle – VS-- early style As well as The early style with COBRA JET STEERING and MEGA FANG PLUS added.

Most prop boats have an angled transom that angles outward from the bottom, this helps to raise the transom when the boat is backing and reduces the drag when doing so.
Most Jet boats do not have this angle, and to make things worse they have either 1 or 2 large voids in the back of the boat where the jet pumps are located.
These voids create drag not only hindering reverse movement but also interfering with side motion. Thus making it more difficult to back the boat in a straight line or when turning the back of the boat in reverse.
Yamaha originally made nozzles that had an oblong reverse thrust opening under the forward thrust opening of the nozzle .
This opening is aimed toward the front of the boat and downward.
So when you wanted to go in reverse you closed the reverse gate to block the jet water from exiting the usual opening thus redirecting it out the bottom opening aiming the thrust toward the front of the boat and at a downward angle .
When you turn the wheel you change the direction of the nozzle to push the boat in either direction while backing.
Keep in mind the shape of the hull FLAT and the openings in the back of the boat working like sea anchors creating drag while trying to move in any direction sideways or going straight backward.
This was why I developed the mega fang system, simply put to capture and direct more of the real reverse thrust and put it to work when backing as well more reverse thrust for stopping the boat when traveling forward. Also as an added benefit I made the fangs go forward of the pivot point of the nozzles to create a mild power steering effect. The power steering effect should also prolong the life of the steering cables and steering components.
What I do not do is take away from the real reverse thrust and put it out sideways .
However with the proper steering fins and the added mega fangs redirecting the back of the boat the improved reverse control should be immediately noticeable and should be more predictable thus providing all the benefits without taking anything away from the original function.

1642360192305.png 1642360456393.png 1642360477886.png 1642360493473.png

The first picture above shows the mega fang plus set mounted on the bottom of an early nozzle.
The numbers on the picture indicate point of interest .
Number 1 shows the regular jet nozzle opening and direction for forward, number 2 shows the reverse water direction going through the reverse shoot and exiting under the nozzle between the mega fang plus fins.
Number 3 shows the pivot point of the nozzle and the front of the mega fang plus fins pointing toward the front of the boat.
Understand that the fin surface ahead of the pivot point of the nozzle creates a power steering effect plus it helps direct the back of the boat in forward and reverse.
The second picture shows how a mega fang plus and the fins interact, the mega fangs mount inside the fins on both sides and lead forward.
The third picture shows the pair of mega fang plus on the bottom of a nozzle.
The fourth picture shows the mega fang plus AK version setup on an articulating keel twin engine in conjunction with the super magnum AK deluxe steering system and the inner mega fang plus modified to accommodate the tie rods.
Now we can take a look at the newest nozzle design from Yamaha with the reverse shoots angled toward the front of the boat with a slight angle sideways and separated into 2 jets rather than just 1 . This provides better steering control than the original nozzles did when backing and turning.

1642360639197.png 1642360667257.png

The second picture shows the early style nozzle reverse water opening for comparison.

Compared to the design changes that came in 2019.

And the newer nozzles works much better stock than the original style did stock.

Below is some info and a couple videos posted on the cobra jet steering face book page by a customer.

super ultimate and mega fang plus at idle in forward. Frank James reverse video - Cobra jet steering customers personal videos after installing the steering and fangs on a 2014 212 Yamaha.

Installed Cobra steering with mega fangs on my Yamaha AR210 and it’s a completely different boat! Tracks better in the water at speed, neutral throttle actually has steering and I can spin in circles in reverse! I have a video if I could figure out how to add it. Love love love this upgrade!

I went with the 195 and love it. I should have immediately installed the cobra jet because it made it a dream to dock and steer while tubing.

This was posted on a Facebook FSH owners group page by a customer who owns a 2022 F S H 252 after trying out the base super magnum ak-19 steering system that adds Just 2 fins and the tie rod on his boat.

"Cobra Steering AK-19 first test run on 2022 252 FSH. Sorry for the length.

My Canal- No wake, about a mile long with bends, turns, docks, shallows, narrow, overhanging mangroves and other stuff. Before Cobra had to start steering way before an obstacle and the start steering back after or at the obstacle. I was hard to not oversteer and had to constantly adjust steering. After Cobra install, can steer right before the obstacle and a responsive turn right after. Boats track easily and did not have to adjust steering all the time very responsive turn without having to oversteer at slow speed.

Coral Creek- Mangrove estuary, 2 miles long. Can go high speed except for a couple of narrow areas with docks that are no wake zones. Usually have to be on plane to get over some of the skinny stuff at lower tides but many of the skinny areas require an on plane turn. Before Cobra, taking a sharp turn at about 25 mph, boat would slide wide and put me near the mangroves or shallow edges. After Cobra, boat turns sharp, almost like my outboard but not quite. Really felt like the boat was digging in when doing a hairpin turn around some mangroves while on plane.

Tidal flow- Prior to Cobra install, In narrow areas of Coral Creek where there is no wake allowed, the tidal flow would push me around and was constantly moving the wheel to make corrections. After Cobra Install, the boat tracked exactly where I steered and only had to make small corrections.

Hands Off- 3/4 mile straight on coral creek, going about 35 mph. I've never been able to remove my hand from the wheel, boat would always veer off to starboard. After install was able to be hands free and boat tracked straight going about 35, didn't veer off in either direction.

Turning while decelerating- Prior to Cobra, boat went straight and kind of slid in whatever direction you were going. After Cobra, Boat did turn the way I wanted but not sharply. Have to test more.

Steering in general with Cobra installed was the same at low speed but required a bit of more effort than stock at higher speeds. I'll take that to keep me out of the mangroves

Just a quick test drive. My 3rd jet boat but my first in FL on skinny water, with twisting turning canals. I probably would have learned either way but I really like the added response for my situation. I went with Cobra due to the added high speed control.

Next test will be out in the Gulf where I had pretty decent chine walk in 1 to 2' chop while going 30+. Was always adjusting the wheel. "

"HI Jeff,

Hope you had a great Labor Day Weekend. Wanted to make sure i send this email out to you to thank you. The boat steering was nothing compared to what we were experiencing before. My wife said to make sure and thank you for creating this. She felt so much more confident driving the boat out on the lake. Again thank you for all your help and your great customer service. "

We love our cobras we made the switch at the start of the summer after have TV's for 8 yrs. Having power steering at high speeds was a game charger on a busy lake. Tracks straight through chop.

Finally got some time to put some hours on my Yamaha SX 192 since installing the Cobra Jet system on the boat. Wow, what a difference in performance, steering and stability of the boat! Docking is easier at low speeds and the reverse actually works now! Thank you for your product and suggestions when I contacted you with my frustration with the jet boat pilot system."

While I am beyond impressed with the no power and no wake mode of the cobra fins, the reverse control from the mega fangs and the improved tracking at plane is what really impresses me. And zero loss of that “jet boat benefit”. I can still crank the steering at full speed and spin a circle and take back off without losing much plane.
Thank you Jeff for such a great product and for amazing customer service!

Posted by an owner of a 2021 fsh sport on jetboaters.net on Sep 12 2021
took delivery of my 2021 FSH 195 Sport June 10th. June 11th I install the Jetboat Pilot Thrust vectors and Simrad Cruise 9. My initial impression before even getting the boat in the water was the plastic construction seemed a bit flimsy and I kind of wondered how they would handle the force of the water day in and day out. I was on the water June 12th. I am new to boat ownership but not entirely new to boating and familiar with no steering off throttle based on riding multiple jetskis over the years. I grew up tubing, skiing, & Knee boarding behind family boats. I thought the control at slow speeds, below 5 MPH, was good. Of course there is no influence at higher speeds with the Jetboat pilot Thrust vectors. Whatever you do keep all factory parts you happen to remove from your boat. You never know when you might need them. Like the small spacers on the reverse bucket you remove when installing the Thrust vectors.
Aug 21 on return to the ramp I found the small round cross support for the thrust vector was bent and the screw was missing on one side (See Pic). Not even 30 hours on the boat. I maintain Instrument landing Systems (ILS), Air to ground communications (Radios), Ground based Navigation systems (VORTAC/DME), Engine Generators, Large facility Power Conditioning systems (PCS), and dabble in Radar, ASR-9 and ARSR-4. Everything I do is based on following instructions to the letter. So I am 100% confident I installed the Thrust vectors correctly and used the provided blue Loctite everywhere it was required. I am convinced the Jet Boat Pilot thrust vector kits will not hold up to years of use.
Aug 22 I emailed Jeff, owner of Cobra Jet Steering and ask for his recommendation for my boat. He emailed me back within hours and recommended the Super Ultimate AK-19 Deluxe system. I ordered the kit that evening. It was delivered Aug 25th and I installed it the next day. Jeff asked for pics after my install to confirm everything looked good. I sent them and he replied within a hour and all was good. My first impression based on the Aircraft aluminum construction is the Cobra Jet Steering kit is much more solid. I was back on the water by Aug 28th. First thing I noticed on the water was I had much more control at speed. Off throttle after a tuber feel off I could actually steer the boat and start my turn before getting back on the throttle a bit to recover the tuber. I have spent 5 days on the water since install of the Cobra Jet Steering and I can say it performs better than the Jet Boat Pilot Thrust vectors for my use. I am just outside Charleston, SC and spend most of our time on the North Edisto River and just outside that inlet.
I Did not reach out to Jet Boat Pilot. I decided I did not want their kit on my boat any longer.
I Recommend the Cobra Jet Kits. But you know what opinions are like so take it for what it is worth.

A couple of customer comments I received today,
" Hey Jeff,
I finally got a chance to test out my Cobra system on the Yamaha 275 SE last week. It was awesome! Definitely everything I expected. "
And another from a 2021 195s owner
"100% satisfied! Of all the things I have bought for this boat this is hands down the best! Night and day difference in handling.
Thank you! " A comment from a 2021 195 s owner after installing the cobra super ultimate deluxe system. "So I ordered the Cobra jet for my 2021 195S after the first outing. A recent comment from a customer with a 2020 AR21 Yamaha
" Will give an interesting bit of information as well. I was on the water and there was something large floating up a head not far, tough sometimes to see in the chop. I reduce throttle hard and turned. The boat grabbed the water and I missed the floating object. I attributed it to the fins that helped me cut the boat very to starboard and gripped the water (not the best term) without issue. None of the sloppy rear end.
I don't have an issue with no Wake steering with the fins they help tremendously, but it is the watersports and WOT where I enjoy what they add to the steering and control. My 2 cents. "
Another comment from a 2021 252 owner
" The cobras give you some control after killing the engines as well. I can kill the engines and turn the boat, it’s great for picking up someone in the water. "
Feedback from a 2018 242 owner
" I’ve had them on 2 boats now. Wouldn’t go without them on any Yamaha moving forward. Fantastic product made by a great guy that’s always willing to help. Jeff’s the best! Loving my fins on my 242X! "
Another from a 2020 AR19 owner
" The Cobra Jet fins definitely make a big difference. Tracking in a straight line is much better. I’m not constantly making corrections. Turning at slow speeds is much improved. The boat reacts a lot faster to steering inputs. I still need to practice though, it’s not magic but the fins make the boat more enjoyable to operate, and adds confidence. Also, Jeff will answer all of your questions. He responded to all of my emails on er Sunday when I did my installation."
From a 2016 242XE owner
" Installed mine this spring and the straight line tracking of my 242X is WAY BETTER now. I thought the rudder would be fine on its own.....Cobra fins have added a ton more control. Totally noticeable. Had the on my last boat....not sure why I waited so long to put them on this one! "

Here is a new comparison post from a customer with a 2021 Yamaha 252 SD jet boat. Just posted a few minutes ago .
Ok. Here it is. Salient facts;
1) New to boating.
2) First boat. First jet boat.
3) Yamaha 252SD 2021
4) I bought both steering systems.
5) I’m in Canada
6) The way both companies ship, you will get nailed with around $100 duty and customs. (Free trade and we are each others largest trading partner???)
Both systems have very intuitive install videos and instructions.
Both companies are excellent to deal with.
Both systems provide very welcomed steering assist at low speed. I now question the effectiveness of the stock articulating keel at all. It is directly perpendicular to the flat stern of the hull and I just question how much water effectively flows over its surface.
The Vectors arrived first so I put them on. I had 12 hours on the new boat stock. I put 3 hours on the vectors in Lake Erie at a bunch of different speeds, anchoring and docking. (Note: the Vectors DO NOT hang below the keel on the 2021 25 footers. No kickstand needed at the beach) After Erie, I pulled the boat, put on the Cobras and trailered to Lake Huron. Big water compared to the inlets and sandbars by my slip in Turkey Point, Lake Erie.
Nothing new here…the Cobras shine at speed. I just love them. It’s been said to me that some boat owners like to drift in turns. With the Cobras and the 2021 hull design, my boat clearly “carves”. When performing a hard turn to starboard, the port side gets lifted in the air and the hull is pretty much point and shoot.
Beside my Dodge Ram, I drive a sports car. So I appreciate the added responsiveness.
i have to admit I really love the new feel of my boat….and I was prepared to put the vectors back on if I didn’t. But I won’t be doing that.
my biggest challenge is reminding myself I DON’T need to oversteer. I find myself doing it when all I need to do is small corrections. I’ll break that habit soon.
I tried a few maneuvers where I cut the throttles and cranked the steering. I was in light chop and had passengers so I didn’t really get to assess the “no power” steering. And as for getting on plane faster…. I don’t crank the throttles…I go to speed gradually so I didn’t assess.
But my final decision is to leave the Cobras installed, and move on. I’m really happy with them.
today I am installing my new gas lift pedestal for the captains chair. I’ll circle back to my thread on that with pictures and hopefully a success story this evening.
thank you Will, thank you Jeff….you guys are such an important part of jet boat culture.
and thanks to those who read my observations.

Very simple install and I send you all the information you need when I send the steering and the tracking number notice. I would also strongly recommend you add an EZ lock to your clean out plug real inexpensive insurance against a plug blow out during use. for all Yamaha boats from the year 2000 to 2016 Cobra EZ-Locks
