Won't know until next spring. It did sound better running in the driveway ?
 
If changed regularly I doubt one could feel any difference, at least not in the 1.8s.
One big advantage of changing those plugs often maybe, as @Cobra Jet Steering LLC points out, reducing the risk of a stuck plug breaking.

This is my 1ST summer with the boat. I'm not sure if the prior owner ever changed them. I feel like I will do this every year though.
 
That's what I do. I feel awkward chucking away what looks like perfectly good plugs, except for those crush washers that dictate how far to tighten the new plugs only work once. Not worth chancing it, to me.
