My 2013 242 Limited S has been sitting for 8-weeks (life events curtailed much of my summer boating) and tried to start the boat yesterday. Port engine starts fine, but Starboard just a faint click. I get a "low voltage" error/display from the tach when trying to start the Starboard engine.

At the ramp, I quickly read some of the JB "related" posts (solenoid, starter, crank, etc.) and messed around yesterday with items that are at my skill level including; cursing, dropping sockets into the engine bay and wishing my hands and body were 1/2 their size and more closely matched the anatomy of the designers of this boat. I did not have enough daylight or the proper tools to get deep enough into this yesterday.

Last night I regrouped and read the JB forum posts more thoroughly and used google to explain to me what a solenoid is and what the purpose of "ground" is. I bought a multi-meter at Walmart ... I've watched a few YouTubes. I am headed back to the boat in 30 minutes with my new found knowledge, more tools, service manual and some better lighting.

I believe yesterday's tweaking has ruled out:
-the clean-out hatch switch (I think)
-the lanyard cut-off switch
-any loose connections at the battery itself
-fuse issues for the fusebox located on the transom wall

I am working w/in a very limited electrical and mechanical skillset but going to give the following a whirl this AM:
-switch the STBD and PORT ignition
-switch the CLEAN OUT switches
-wiggle wires and drop tools
-more cursing
-trace voltage per the education provided on the many related JB posts

Subscribe or PM me if you'd like a Saturday morning diversion. I am assuming that you boat maintenance whisperers in the midwest, northwest and northeast have had your boats put away now and are itching for an interesting challenge ...

how fast does the port engine crank? Is it pretty fast or is it slow like the battery doesn’t have enough juice?
Is it the original battery?

If battery seems fine it could be the starboard impeller is hung up not letting the motor crank.
just my 02 cents.

@Ratket thanks for the impeller check headsup. Will add that to the list. Battery is new and showing correct voltage. The click I hear is immediate, when turning the key.

Good job troubleshooting @Ilmmct. You'll need to buy a, keyed alike, pair of switches.

@Gym thanks for clarifying that. I was about to order the part for just the STBD side and did not consider the keying issue this would have created. Would you happen to know if there is a non-Yamaha branded equivalent?

When in doubt ,,,,Curse Louder ....nice work on the troubleshooting

@Jeel thanks for the compliment, but my role was reading and following the work of braver members that went before me and documented their experience for the benefit of others.

I ordered a Yamaha set online for my 06SX230. Not sure if you can get a locksmith to rekey if you buy or find a single ignition.
