Spinning off from the what do you do thread.....

I have been in telecom for 14 years. For the past 6-7 years I have been with Unique Computers which is based out of NJ. I am actually in TN, work from home, and the other guys are also spread out all over the east coast. We develop and support NMS software for companies like AT&T, TWTC, TWC, VzW, EarthLink, CenturyLink, and a bunch of other smaller telecom companies. Our software supports services from DS0 to OC192, Ethernet, ATM/FR across multiple equipment vendors (Cisco, ALU, Tellabs, Ciena, Fujitsu, etc).

I love the work and I love showing people how much we can do for them (guess I'm kinda a nerd). Showing a struggling NOC manager how his techs could see a circuit from end to end across all different types of equipment through our software just never gets old to me! We also provide process management/improvement solutions to improve day to day efficiencies and reduce customer outages, etc. I could go on for hours about it honestly.

What company do you work for and what is your specific role?

And we support DWDM. Sorry I forgot that one

I'm an old Novel CNE 3.x/4x that moved to the Cisco side soon after. I'm an infrastructure director now so I don't get my hands as dirty as I would like but there is nothing like providing guidance to guys starting out in the field

@tim2808 is your NMS focused soley on transport systems or do you manage switching systems as well? I work for Onvoy Voice Services in a Network Architecture role. I dont recall seeing Unique Computers in the marketplace but I dont spend a ton of time on NMS stuff.

Today (and the past 20 years) we are mainly focused in the transport world but we are moving into the layer 2, layer 3 world. We are looking for a company to partner up with to develop that type of support and to learn the process and procedures used in that world. It is very different than transport. Our goal as a company is to provide one view for everything. To display the routers and switches and also the transport gear in between in one view, one circuit/path trace.

Interesting. I think it would be worth discussing offline.

Reviving this thread after a few months. If any of you telecom guys are interested in talking about our software please drop me a line. I am positive we do more than any other NMS/EMS system does and we do it across all vendor equipment types. I would love to show some of you an online demonstration.

Mark, you will be happy to know that I am in the process of spending a small fortune with AT&T to upgrade just about everything around here. I already have my order in to bump up the bandwidth to 50M and I'm picking out new phones for the Cloud based PBX we are moving over to.
