Temperature Warning on New boat

Hello guys, im a new boater and purchased a new 2020 Yamaha SX190, within the first hour and a half at the lake the temperature warning came on, I turned it off but was in the middle of the lake so got nervous, waited 10 minutes and started it, the warning came back on, shut it off another 10 minutes and started it, warning came on again, so just decided to ignore it and turned the buzzer off and kept moving around 12-13 mph and the warning never came back? Rode it for about 10 minutes back to shore... It's going to the dealer next week but I'm curious, isn't this odd for a new engine? What gives? We were in a lake and didn't notice any floating debris etc.... Thanks

Before the temp light came on did you run around at high speed or WOT and then shut it off to sit for a while, then fired it back up and got the over temp warning? If in that scenario I've seen it happen. Ever since then always idled at a high cruise with blower on any time I did some spirited driving for a while and never had the over temp come back. Could have just been a fluke and something temporarily blocked your cooling strainer (located just past the nozzle area) then eventually cleared out.

Well yes, we did some spirited driving for maybe 15 minutes but not full blast, and i was moving the revs up and down a little, then we slowed down, and let the engine idle a bit to let it cool down, and then shut it off for 10 minutes as we were sitting chatting, and fired it up and thats when the engine temp beep and light came on. I shut it off again, for another 10 minutes, and started it, and again the alarm came off, so I cleared the alarm as it gave me an option to do so, and revved it up hoping to get water into it to get it cooled, and after clearing the alarm, it did not come back, we rode maybe 2 miles towards the docks and no alarm again... i know the dealer advised we not floor it until the engine breaks in, but im hoping it will be fine.... it was a hot day here in Dallas, around 95 plus and the water was tepid warm, not sure if that would matter much, just surprised for a system that is water cooled, with the stream working, it would overheat...

Something is fishy in denmark. Ive ran my new 2019 from day one, in 93+ days with 88+ degree water and had no issues at WOT. It sounds like to me you got some crappy QC from the factory. You may need to check your water intake port for possible obstruction(left over fiberglass, big chunk of silicon, probably tape/metal shavings). All things i cleaned out of my engine compartment and various area's before i launched my boat the first time. It sucks but its Yamaha's awesome QC at work. Sorry to hear it mate.

@Tariq-S glad to have you on board! what lake/ramp are you normally using ?

If the indicator stream is working that's a good sign but not a sure thing, there are several heat sensors both on the engine and exhaust that could be throwing the code,

I might suggest a infrared thermometer to take a couple readings of the engine/exhaust the next time you go out,

I know, it's a brand new boat and you shouldn't be dealing with it but your trusting to the dealer to fix it when we've heard plenty of stories of "can't replicate the problem".......

wow! ...the reason i bought it was that I have had Yamaha motorcycles in the past and had no issues with them, so that is a bit sad to know that poor QC might be a culprit, I am hoping its something simple...its unacceptable for a new boat with barely 2 hours on it to do this. Will update once the dealer has had a chance to look at it.

Scott we went to Lake Lewisville, North Dallas.... launched off of Little Elm ramp... also after the hot temp episode, we ended the day grandly by getting the fender rope caught in the impeller while loading up, and since I foolishly had it attached to one of the Bimini top bars, it just popped off with a sickening snap crackle and pop!...sigh... newbie!!! my SUV was in the lane idling, my boat is now drifting off with no power, and I felt the entire nightmare of how not to be a stupid launch failure was coming true.... had a couple of drunks yell curses at me for hogging the ramp, but he had 2 open, so not sure why that was necc.... but luckily a helpful boater snagged me as i was drifting by.... the good thing is we made a lot of helpful friends, and didn't lose a finger and any digits... also found out boatUS insurance really works sweet, had a tow boat in around 30 minutes, also was happy to find out that the plug in the back to clear the impeller of any debris works well, and was very glad I caught the dealer mention to make sure and bring a knife always, which i did, so just had to cut through it as it was wound super super tight.... all in all, it was a exciting but stressful tiring first day of boat ownership, we got back at 11 pm... been up since 5 am, my brain felt numb.. but what a learning experience.... i don't have IR therm but will buy one now to keep it handy,... its under warranty, so will let them tool with it...less they find an excuse to deny warranty.

I would suggest you pull the pump. I did not realize you sucked up a rope ( we give trophys for that) but it is possible some fragments are left behind and causing a slight cavitation. Pulling the pump is easy and can bring reassurance that everything is clear.

Generally cooling is better at WOT than when zig zagging around and varying speeds. Also, cooling it off at high idle or about 2,000 rpm is a good idea after hard runs. If you are just idling cooling is not great. Turning the blower fan on between runs when you are sitting but the engine is still hot - very good idea.

Sounds like your engine never went into a limp mode. I wouldn’t worry too too much about this, yet. If runs fine, likely completely fine.

If you are just idling cooling is not great. Turning the blower fan on between runs when you are sitting but the engine is still hot - very good idea.

Sounds like your engine never went into a limp mode. I wouldn’t worry too too much about this, yet. If runs fine, likely completely fine.

Thanks for the added tips, i will let the blower run next time, UPDATE, its at the dealer, they could not replicate as mentioned above, and so will just have to learn to keep all the tips in mind. The broken parts for the Bimini top including the repair job is going to cost me $300 in parts and $900 to repair the fiberglass as they would have to remove the remains of the broken off support and redo it, as well as found out the inlet grate at the bottom near the shaft which is new for 2020 also cracked and broke, it amazing the damage one rope could do... attaching some pictures for reference, the dealer says the grates are not available at Yamaha as they are all purposed for the new production builds but that they will put in a request to pull one from assembly, so all said and done... i am going to let insurance take care of it, anyone have any experience with insurance? im concerned if my rates would go up? im with Geico marine.
