I don't own a trailer anymore. Leave my boat on the lift year-round.

I am weighting my options for a trim tab install. For the folks that have installed trim tabs, you think it is a good idea for to install them while the boat is on the lift? Or very very bad idea?

Shouldn't be a problem. As long as you can work safely behind it. If the lift is over water, I would take extra precautions, like floating pads and such. It really isn't that bad of a job. I made a stencil and taped the stencil to the transom and drilled one screw. Then I mounted the hinge to the transom with the one screw and tightened it down after I positioned it right where I wanted it. I drilled small pilot holes for the other screws in the center of each hole in hinge. then I removed the hinge and drilled all of the holes. I countersink the holes with a 3/4" stepped bit or countersink, but not tooo much, just enough to slightly take the edge of the hole off, the fiberglass is not that thick. Then I used 5200 and mounted the hinge. Worked perfectly.

The key is to get them where you want them.

I can’t find it but I recently saw a post where someone was working on their outboard with the boat up on the lift using one of those huge floating reef mats.
