Just getting into surfing. I have a 4'5" Happy Pill. It's only rated for 185 lbs, and I'm 210lbs. I tried the Happy Pill, but I'm obviously too heavy for it.

I've been researching other boards, and have it somewhat narrowed down. I'm a beginner, but don't want to buy a board I'll grow out of quickly. If anyone has experience with these boards, please let me know what you think of them.

Pretty much in order of what I'm looking at:

Victoria Captain

Phase 5 Model X

Phase 5 Trident

Inland Surfer Blue Lake

Inland Surfer Tako

I have the same question. I've been looking at the phase 5 trident. I've read a lot of good things, but it isn't cheap. I know there's some inland surfer guys here, so maybe we'll get some opinions on them all.

The Tako is one of the best all around boards you can buy. If you can find one I would get it.

Good luck on your search, finding the right board is tough since you can't really demo/test drive them. I know some shops have demo days, etc. but that's pretty few and far between...

You are on the right track finding a board based on what you are listing above and what others have recommended. Generally for someone 220+ lbs I would look for a board with more surface area, maybe with a waist size that continues a bit further to the tip and tail of the board, like a Happy Pill does. Another thing to look at would be something over the 5' length, I would only go longer based on your height from there. 5' 2"+ if you are over 6' tall, etc. Granted the bigger the board you go the less maneuverable the board is going to be, so keep that in mind. I currently have a 5'6" Ronix Koal Fish that I really like as a good all around board, but as I have surfed more I would like to find a similar shape board to the Koal Fish but in the 5'-5'2" size.

I'm surfing the Inland Surfer Blue Lake. I do believe the Red Rocket is slightly larger.

It works for me at 240lbs. But it's like riding a barn door for the kids. If you want to float the big bod, then those two Inland Surfers work well. As others have said, it's not for spinning, but it's a great surf board.

Good luck!

CWB Voodoo Wakesurf Board. I rented one last year and they bought a new one they had. I am 210 and it floats me well. I can easily go rope less behind my 210. Not the longest pocket but the board rides great. Behind my friends MC I have trouble staying off the swim platform on a steep wave. I actually notices some scratches on the back of his boat the other day. He said they were from his son and I running our boards into the back. Yes, I have tagged the back a few times on the Voodoo

I would also say to look into he CWB boards. I rode on both of @Bill D and his latest I think is called the Hinkley or something like that. For a shorter board it's much wider surface than my surf style Fish board is therefore it had a lot of bouyancy. So much that it takes a lot of force to even flip the board over when deep water launching. His wife had a little trouble overcoming that force and even I could get tired if I didn't get up. But once I did get up I could feel it wanting to stay in the pocket. I probably could go ropeless on that board and I'm a heavy guy at 5'10 ish and 235 lbs.

Look up beater boards or odysea catch surf boards they make wakesurf boards now . Start looking for the higher volume boards lots of brands list volume of specs and dimensions . They are soft top boards and hard bottoms. They are really tuff ,look up who is J.O.B vids on YouTube they ride pipeline, Mavericks they hold up I think they are like 39 liters I don't have one yet but I have surfed on beach breaks . And the cost is good.

Thanks for the replies! I'm still undecided. Going to think it over and order on Thursday.

Hyperlight Landlock 5'9" is the board my buddies and I all used the most. We also had a CWB at the time, but the Landlock gave us more stability t0 get the basics for beginners down before advancing to other boards. We still keep it in the rotation and love the surf. On another note - plan on pulling out the foil board this weekend for the first time. WOOT.

Ended up getting the Victoria Captain. Being new to surfing I can't really give a review. Still getting the ballast figured out, but felt really comfortable on the board and felt like it was sized right for me.
