I have a 2013 212x and it’s rates for 9 people and 1760 lbs (or close to that) but the newer models with same engines are rated for 10 people and around 1860ish. I can’t find a reason why. Does anyone know why the difference?

I thought the hull exterior changed in 2017, but the interior prior to that? Could have been additional freeboard, flotation, etc (or maybe even just a marketing decision!) to increase the rating.

Regardless 9 or 10 adults would be cramped on either boat. The weight capacity difference is only 100 lbs do that's more like a kid or extra gear. I certainly wouldn't worry over it if I had an older 21' boat lol. If anything the keel running surface may have helped increase its rating. I don't think there were any significant deck changes.

I recall reading those ratings are based on loading the boat up with weight until it sinks, and then using a percentage of that weight as the max weight on the plate. Also people got lighter according to the plate makers at some point in the last few years, so the 2009?? Had greater people capacity that 2008?? Some year was weird but don't recall exactly.

It's fascinating all this is made up by the manufacturers association. I can't go look it up now, but if you do.. It will be worthwhile and eye opening.

The new hull allows for additional buoyancy.

it changed again from 2012?

i had a 2011, 21' the hull changed in 2012,
i now have a 2013 21'
2017 seems the same to me
Yes they added a new hull for 2017 with a keel that runs the length of the boat just like the 2015+ 24' boats got. Also has the articulating rudder.

that's right... i was not thinking about that... i was thinking of the whole design in general.

All of the boats themselves haven't had a total redesign (complete new hull and deck design) since the first gen boats. I would consider the newer boats as Gen 3.5. A total redesign maybe by 2020 would be my guess. Kind of like a 10 year plan that Yamaha iterates upon before going to a completely new boat design.

the 210 / 212 series had a major hull change from 2011 to 2012... that is why we upgraded

Yes exactly. The one on the left would be what I call Gen 2 (Exciter boat era is Gen 1) and the one on the right a Gen 3. The newer 21' boats (2017+) have the same/similar top deck as a Gen 3 but the main difference is the new running surface/hull so I call those a Gen 3.5 since it's not a total redesign. A Gen 4 would be a complete redesign from the ground up just like Gen 3 was from Gen 2 as it was from Gen 1.

This capacity plate plate is from a canoe!

Guessing that the manufacturer submits the amount of "ballast" to be tested, rather than adding weight until failure.

They make another product that is a little faster and does better barrel rolls.

I checked my this out a few years ago when I noticed that the within the first generation 240 series boats (I.e., same hull and engines) there is a difference in seating capacity. The 2013 and 2014 boats can hold 11 (possibly 12) passengers but the 2010 though 2012 can only hold 10, per the placard anyway.

What I recall finding is that the us coast guard sets the standards within waters in their jurisdiction (I.e., all waters within the us and it’s coasts) and that the average person’s weight had decreased in the years before 2012 but the coast guard did not formally recognize this until 2013. The result being that a boat could hold more people than initially determined when it was built even though the total weight capacity had not changed.

For discussion proposes, assume that the average person weighed 200 lbs. and a boat with a 2000 lbs capacity, in which case it could hold 10 people (2000/200=10).
If during the next year it is determined that the average person weighs 180 lbs, the boat could now hold 11 people (2000/180=11.11).

Get it, got it, good?

But the stupid thing is you can get busted if you are over the people number, but under the weight limit. It's kind of like getting busted for an expired fire extinguisher on a waverunner. Doesn't make a bit of sense.
