Which South East lake for upcoming relocation?

@Andy S I hate traffic and while many consecutive days above 90 does sound a bit hot for my liking I find consecutive days below freezing horrible. I enjoy cycling and skiing and have determimed that a annual February trip to Big Sky in Montana will take care of the skiing part. I imagine cycling early or late in the day will work for some of the hotter days? The Irmo/Chapin area certainly sounds more appealing. We are going to check it out the end of this month. Thanks for the help.

Consecutive days above 90 isn't the problem. It's the damn humidity that is killer. I'm close to Atlanta, and cant even go outside at 7 am without sweating bullets. Seems worse in South Carolina too. Last time I was in Charleston it was miserable. Even still, I will take the hot any day over long cold winters.

I moved to the Charleston area from Fort Lauderdale. By comparison, it is dry here... Used to run 6 miles 3 days per week before work down there and the ground water was warm so there were no cold showers. I'd sweat all freaking day. Here, at least, the ground water is almost cool.

Thanks to everyone that chimed in or sent pms. I just spent the day checking out multiple lake front properties on lake Murray with my wife and my 17 year old daughter. First of all my daighter who was previously sold on UNC Chapel Hill (did a tour late last year) being her number one choice if accepted is now in love with USC Columbia and uas bumped UNC Chapel Hill to number two (sorry Tarhells).

Before this thread I had Lake Norman as my number one and now it is number 3. As of right now my family will very likely be living on the north side of Lake Murray next year. And 3-4k sq ft with a dock won't cost 1mm!

And you won't be thinking about winterization this time next year either!

If you are down in the area again hit me up, the wife and I would be more than happy to give you a tour of Lake Murray, that is as long as you don't mind riding in a prop boat.

@Andy S - I will take you up on that at some point next year. Local knowledge is priceless.

I live in the upstate of SC, so I'll add some input here. We usually go to Lake Keowee, but also go to Hartwell and Jocassee regularly.

Jocassee is a secluded mountain lake that is deep, cold and clear. Very few houses, very expensive, and way out of town.

Keowee backs up to Jocassee and the Northern end is mostly made up of the "Cliffs at Keowee" golf course and subdivision. The water is very clean and clear, but it is heavily populated and gets extremely busy on weekends and dangerously packed on holidays. The water is more open on the South end, and there are a few nice restaurants on the Water.

I don't know lake Hartwell very well, but it is more of a fishing lake. The water usually drops quite a bit during the summer. Some years 15' or more during drought conditions. The water gets cloudy on busy weekends. Hartwell has it all from restaurants to party coves to secluded fishing spots, but the water is not nearly as clean as the others.

If I had to choose a spot on the these 3 lakes, it would be the South end of Keowee in Seneca, or the North end of Hartwell in Clemson. In town, close to Greenville, and Clemson football right down the road.

I haven't been to Lake Murray, but I'll check it out next summer for sure.

One last thing. All 3 of these lakes, and probably some others you are looking at have fluctuating water levels. Some docks will be unusable in drought conditions.

Ok time to revive this thread. I closed on the new house in Chapin, SC this past Thursday. Through all of the college tours we did with our daughter my wife and I also checked out different areas to live. USC and the area were not on our map but after @Andy S recommended it we checked it out. We loved Irmo and Chapin at first sight and made two more visits before landing on this location.

The different micro location, house, and budget priorities ended up putting us in a new community a bit off the water but we are 2 miles or less from everywhere the kids and us need to be on a daily basis and 10-15 minutes from the marina where our boat will be dry stacked.

@Andy S took me out on his boat last week while is was sleeting in Maine on the rest of my family. It was a gorgeous afternoon with good folks (mrs Andy joined too) and I look forward to meeting more like minded folks down here. The big move won't happen until the school year is over but I will be back and forth a bit until then. When the big move happens I will make the official announcement and update my location. I will be keeping my screen name as I will always have a soft spot for Maine even though I can't seem to leave soon enough at this point.

For those considering relocating Don't hesitate to put Lake Murray on your list of places to check out. Lake Murray will is a large deep and clean lake with plently of amenities and opportunity.

Congrats!

We love Lake Murray, and Andy & Cindy are awesome people!

Awesome man! You are only 3.5 hours from Atlanta now. Maybe I'll yank my boat over to Murray one day.

@MattFX4 Go ahead and keep driving and join a larger group for the Charleston Run in late May.

@Mainah Congrats on the new house and upcoming relocation. This time tomorrow, my wife and I will know if we'll be relocating as well. Hopefully, we'll be moving about an hour west of Augusta, GA in the Greensboro, GA area which is commonly referred to as Georgia's Lake Country. I look forward to meeting you and the family in Charleston.

Or maybe I will yank mine over to you. I need to hear and see your stereo to make me even more jealous.

Hopefully things work out for you. We are all looking foward to meeting folks that enjoy boating and and know to have a little fun. We are also looking foward to exploring South East boating locations. We may need some lessons in extended relaxing though as that is something we are not very good at but hope to get the hang of. I hear the heat will slow us down.
