So, I am building one in a separate building from the house. Likely 20x30x5.5 pool. In a building made from materials that resist corrosion. Likely some sort of hybrid Quonset hut. Possibly some CMU or metal framed walls. There will be 3 to 4 large windows facing the lake. The pool will be vinyl lined. The treatment will likely be bromine. The sidewalls will possibly be CMU. The building will be well insulated. The roof will be covered in solar pool heater panels. I plan to build, monitor, improvise and adapt. The goal is to allow exercise swimming through the fall, winter and spring. It will get less use in the summer when we are on the lake.

Check out Waters Choice for alternatives to chemicals for water treatment. We have been using their enzyme product in our hot tub for two years and in the pool last year.

It really does what the website claims. Crystal clear water with very little hands on work. All I do is add a cap full every two weeks and change the filter on the hot tub. With the pool you are supposed to keep a miniscule level of chlorine, but we routinely had no chlorine at all and it was our best year ever.

No personal experience with putting a structure over the pool, but I have given plenty of thought about putting a "greenhouse framed structure" over the pool to extend the season and put a heat exchanger in and run hydronic lines from my outdoor boiler to heat the pool. However they are not the best looking setups and it would be too hot in july/Aug. unless I took it down. Would like my pool, 12x24x5.5 to look like this in mid April
