According to the yamaha manual, it says replace the steering gear if there is excessive play in the steering? Define excessive? Also my steering is notchy, not sure if its the gear or cable? Is there a good way to lube the cables?

If you go under the helm there's 4 bolts that hold the steering cables to the steering wheel shaft it probally needs grease. Grease that up real good and it should take away a lot of that notchy feeling you are speaking of. Make sure you pay attention to your steering wheel alignment when you put it back together. Put a straight edge across the nozzles and turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead alignment.
