What is everybody using for their anchor on a Yamaha 195. Does anyone know how deep the anchor locker is, ie will a fortress fx-7 anchor fit in it?

@Mbruce122 We have a 2020 SX195. I hope to be at the boat tomorrow, if so will take measurements and a picture to post. We have a small Fortress/Danforth "type" slip ring anchor - maybe a 4 pound. I think the Fortress F-& is very similar to what we have. If remember the F-7 is about 4-5 pounds and similar to ours - the length of the "bar" above your flukes may be longer than ours BUT but the same set-up would probably apply with a bigger anchor. The bar above the flukes of our anchor was almost too short to fit into the two composite blocks with black latches that Yamaha installs in the locker so I added two pins via ss screws to stop it from moving side-to-side (worked perfectly). I then put a piece of 1" foam under the flukes so they wouldn't bounce and damage the gelcoat in the locker. Finally I put a webbing strap with two suction cups to hold the flukes down to the foam pad. This works awesome. This small anchor is awesome for sand, gravel and a weeds - 90% of where I boat. I think I will add 8-10 feet of galvanized chain which I will put into a plastic container in the locker to keep it from scratching the gelcoat while stored. The chain should help the anchor stay set.

My 2019 AR 195 came with a Danforth style anchor. The lakes we boat on have a sandy / muddy / weedy bottom (depending upon which side of the lake you were on) and the anchor never hooked up anywhere. It always fowled with weeds or would just drag across the bottom in the smallest of winds / waves. I tired extra chain, extra rode, nothing worked with that anchor. I just purchased an 8lb Mantus M1 anchor and absolutely LOVE it. I did not install the roll bar on it and it fits inside the 195 anchor locker in the same spot where the Danforth anchor was held down. I flipped it upside down and the two tabs where the roll bar normally bolt on fit perfectly inside the anchor holds in the locker. I have used it about four times now and this little anchor really holds and grabs right away even without the roll bar installed. This past Monday we went out to a friends house on his island in the middle of the lake. He just built a new dock and did not have cleats installed on it yet so I dropped anchor about 40 feet from shore and walked (swam) away from the boat for the entire day. The Boat did not move or drift at all in a moderate wind.

@Dutch Do you still like the Mantus 1? I thought the roll bar was a key component of the anchor, but if it still works without it great. I had posted the member (can't remember name) who became a dealer and asked if it fit in the locker (a must for me), hadn't heard back yet. You just answered that question, yes with modifications.

@Mbruce122 Your profile doesn't say where you'll be anchoring. That will play a large role in what kind of anchor is best for your situation.

I personally run a 22lb "Navy Anchor" on my AR190. It's held in some pretty treacherous conditions, as well as some decent current. It's attached with a stainless D-Ring, and 150ft of 1/4in nylon rode. It's served me really well for 4 seasons now, however I'm mostly in rocky and muddy bottoms with depths under 75ft. I'm unsure how it would do in sandy bottom, significant depths, or other unforseen conditions.

Had a Danforth style for about a month in an attempt to reduce weight in the bow (plus I lost my first Navy style on July 4th weekend). Even with 10ft of chain it would often not hold as well as I liked, and created just a general anxiety about the boat staying where I wanted it to. Went back to the Navy style, and all was well again.

I run one of these 4lb Lewmar Aluminum Fluke Anchors. They are awesome. They dig in and they don't break your back pulling them up. I use 6' of Stainless Steel rode chain with them. The 4lb is rated up to a 30' boat. The rod is a bit long so I cut it with a cut off wheel and rounded the end and it fits in the hold downs in the locker. the good thing is it is aluminum so cutting it is easy!

Not sure what I have, but the owner upgraded to this big claw that folds out and swore by it... it does seem to hold the boat well. It just lays on the floor of the anchor locker unsecured, though, as it doesn't fit in the stock mount. I'm mildly worried if I were ever to encounter some rough waters the anchor may bounce around in there and damage something or even puncture a hole. Is this a risk with aftermarket anchors flopping around or am I paranoid?

Yes you could knock a hole in the hull if a heavy enough anchor bounces around in there during rough waves or impacts. It happened to a buddy of mine on his way to Bimini with the group but they were in some pretty heavy wave conditions that year. This was with extra padding inside the anchor locker.

I’d find some way to secure your anchor in there to prevent it from bouncing.

That's the first I've heard or seen of this. I've had the front of mine pound a few times, and my 22lb anchor just sits in there on top of the nylon line. Wonder if the shape of the anchor contributed to the damage? Maybe the waves were significantly harder hitting than anything I've been in? Definitely something I hadn't even considered until now.

Oh my god that seems terrible. Anyone have suggestions on what they have done with new anchors to prevent this?

It’s not the norm but it can happen. This was during the great 2017 bimini run where several boats suffered damage. Big thread on it if you want some good reading material! https://jetboaters.net/threads/jetb...-10th-to-15th-2017.11966/page-144#post-248915

Hi kgower,
Yes I still like the Mantus 1 . I opted not to install the roll bar to get the anchor to fit in the anchor locker. That was a must for me, it had to fit in the anchor locker and also be able to secure it down. I trailer my boat on occasion and did not want to worry about it bouncing around in the locker bashing the hull. I know they design it to be used with the roll bar but honestly I never had a problem with it not catching without it installed. I always lower the anchor by the rode like you are supposed to and then back my boat up to set the anchor in the bottom. I suppose if you literally threw the anchor out it might land upside down tangled in the rode and not set right, but like I said I used it all last summer without the roll bar and never had an issue. I wish I had taken a picture of it this summer but now it is parked side of my garage in shrink wrap. I will take a photo this spring and post one as soon as it starts to warm up. The Mantus M1 8lb anchor was perfect for my AR 195.

We will be trailering ours on every outing. Thanks for the input.
