Does anyone know why the Yamaha seating capacity is much lower than other ski boats despite bigger hull, lighter weight and higher rated load capacity?

For example, the Mastercraft X25 has max load of 2400 lbs / 16 persons.
The 242 has a max load of 2700 lbs / 12 persons

This is an issue for 2 reasons:
1) I can’t have more than 12 people on my boat during the holiday weekend
2) I’m offended by the assumed average weight of a Yamaha boat vs Mastercraft (225 vs 150 lbs) - JK of course

No idea. Curious that the weight is higher but the number of people is lower. Personally, I’ve focused more on the weight than the number of people. Not sure if that argument holds water if you get a ticket though,

The weight is what an enforcement officer is going to look at - and more importantly - the PFD's for everyone. I was actually pleased that Yamaha considered real world weight vs. the old school version of weight. This is America and we're a bunch of fatties, for pete's sake. :)

I've always wondered if I'd have issues getting stopped with 1400lbs worth of ballast, another 200 pounds in gear/coolers, and 6 adults in the boat. I would technical be over by a couple hundred pounds, however not sure if ballast counts against the total weight. I assume it does.

I agree that the higher weight capacity is what’s important for safety purposes. But cops don’t weigh us and our luggage before issuing a ticket :)

I wish Yamaha would just change the sticker and call it a day. They will be covered since they also post the weight limit.

Doesn't Yamaha include the swim platform in it's length, and most wakeboats don't? That would make that 25' Mastercraft like 27' by Yamaha's standards.

I see a couple of dudes drinking Truly’s, a little suspect to me....on another note, maybe Mastercraft takes weight into account with ballast full, and passenger count without? Anyone know if the regular AR240 has the same weight rating as the 242? That would be telling.

Sorry to break the news, Beer is going extinct on the lakes...

The weight capacity doesn’t change between the 242 models (including the X)

My understanding is factory installed/built-in ballast does not count against it. Portable/aftermarket ballast (e.g. fat sacks) does.
Basically, if you load it on the boat it counts against it.

My friend was doing the calculations the other night and said, "everyone would have to be 74 kilos" (Well, she actually said it in stones first 11.5)
Why can't we have cool weight measurements like the rest of the world?!?! ;-)

That’s what the Zima squad used to say lol. To each their own I say....as for capacities, idk why the weight amount is lower but passenger count higher on the Mastercraft. Seems weird that I can load the same weight in a 240 and a 242, then add 100 gallons or more of water to the 242 and still be legal. Same would go for any craft with built in ballast.

The formula for computation is different for less than 25 feet and 25-26 feet and 26+ foot boats. Plus there are differences in the weight per person used in the calculations.
