I am looking at possibly getting a Tonneau Cover but unsure if I want the roll type or the tri-fold. Budget I am willing to spend is a few hundred max. I really only need for travelling once in awhile to keep gear dry and I can remove and store in garage if that will preserve the life. Or I can keep on if good quality.

I only saw this thread https://jetboaters.net/threads/peragon-truck-bed-covers.2200/ but it does not address the roll vs trifold.

If I were to keep the cover on I suppose the roll type would be better so I can carry things right up against the cab. But for the amount of times I carry large items I can remove it then as well. And the tri-folds seem more sturdy.

Here are 2 that I am looking at

Tri-fold Type
http://www.autoanything.com/tonneau-covers/60A4819A0A0.aspx

Roll Type
http://www.autoanything.com/tonneau-covers/60A2044A0A0.aspx

Not sure how the quality compares between these and the $800+ covers but I am not willing to spend that much. I've lived 8 years without a cover on my truck and can continue that if needed. But for $250 maybe its worth it.

Thought?

Thanks in advance.
Mike

Look at TonnoPro trifold hard cover. Will cost you around $530.00.

We put a BAK Revolver X2 on our Ram. What a great cover! When its open you can see over it, when its closed its LOCKED! Great for security great for keeping weather out. It was pricey, I got a 20% discount which made it better. I don't like the tri-folds because theres no way to see your cargo or anything behind you for that matter when they're open.

I've had a complete freaking disaster with a Bak flip VP. The cover is complete junk and now the manufacturer is dragging their feet on my replacement. Due to my experience, it's my opinion that I will never give Bak Industries another Penney of my hard earned money!! **Drops mic and walks off stage**

Note--- my cover has never had anything on it other than rain and sun. Apparently that's enough to warp the piss out of their cheap crap cover **Drops mic again**

Wow @Murf'n'surf That looks terrible! I remember we installed about the same time last summer right? I remember you complaining about some puddling but thats bad. Too bad Bak isn't working to make you a happy customer. That sucks. We've had good luck with ours (Fingers crossed) I try to condition with 303 in order to keep the vinyl soft.

Hows that hack working for the Touch screen? Were you able to unlock the SRT screen? I still want that.

I have had the roll up type in my last two trucks, I like them because it's easy to roll up and use your whole bed and when you take it off it takes up very little room in the garage or wherever to store it.

My old truck I had an ExTang brand with snaps, I had no problems with it at all for the 4 years or so I had it. I can't remember the brand of the one I have now, but it has the lip that the edge hooks under on all sides, I haven't had a problem with it either, a Lowes employee threw a bag of mulch on one of my cross bars and bent it into almost, I bent it back and attached a piece of aluminum to the bottom where it was cracked. Probably stinger now than it was before.

Yep, same age as your cover!

The hack (Customtronix.com) is great but no SRT available in the USA. I guess you could order it to somebody in Europe and you'll get that option unlocked.

I would go with this one that you posted.

Roll Type
http://www.autoanything.com/tonneau-covers/60A2044A0A0.aspx

I had that exact cover on my ford for 10 years and never had any problems. Was still in great shape when I traded the truck in. I never had any issues with it not being sturdy. It had numerous amounts of heavy wet snow (12"+) and never had any issues. I would buy it again!

On my new to me Ram, I currently have a trifold like the one you posted (Mopar trifold tonneau cover) and do not like it! It came with the truck when I purchased it and thought I would give it a shot. My biggest complaint that is that if I want to use the entire truck bed, I have to remove the cover all together. Which means I either have to make room in the truck bed for it (not practical for me) or leave it behind. Also, this might just be my particular cover, but the latches do not hold the cover in place. (Was told by the dealer service department that movement was normal on a tonneau cover and that they all do it! Which is complete BS but I digress.) I had to place shims under the latches to get it to hold properly. I will say, that framework of the trifold is "beefier" than the roll-up, but again, I never felt the roll-up did not offer enough support - after all, neither cover is designed to carrier items on top of it or stand on it.

For me, due to how I like full easy access to the truck bed, at some point I will get rid of the trifold and go back to the roll type.

Exactly what I was looking for. I didn't even think of the storage issue if I remove. The roll type would be much more easier and compact to store. I don't plan to load anything on top nor do I plan to store tools or anything so safety is not an issue. I just need to keep gear dry for the trips we take. So sounds like the roll type would work best.

One thing I forgot to mention is my Titan has the utili-track system so I have rails running the length of the bed. Just need to make sure the clamps work with that. Some sites I looked at have that as a selection option and others do not. So I just need to make sure where I buy it from it works.

Thanks fellas for the advice. Appreciate it.

I have the same cover as @Murf'n'surf and mine is starting to bubble, I would not recommend, @Murf'n'surf how long have you had your cover and is BAK doing anything about it? I've had mine for about 1 1/2 years so it's out of warranty.

That's what the guy said at Bak.

The VP has a 1 year and the Revolver X2 has 3 years. Almost like they knew the VP is a piece of crap.

@96Pirate How much stuff do you haul on a trip that you need to keep dry or from flying out? Something to consider instead is maybe a toolbox. You can pickup one for what the tonneau covers y'all are considering cost. Before I had a toolbox in my truck I found a product by Kanga called a Pickup Pouch. The company is more known for their rooftop car/SUV luggage bags. Mine is much larger and fits in the bed of the truck in the floor between the rails like where a toolbox would sit. It's a waterproof bag/pouch with a zipper closure. You can't really lock it to secure it, but I've never felt it was needed. The beauty of it is when it's emptied and you're done with it you can just roll it up and put it away. I don't remember what I paid for it, or if it's still available since I bought it almost 20 years ago. Yes it's still in good shape and very usable because I've put it into service the past three weekends. Just my $.02.

Will be heading down to the Outer Banks in a few weeks with the family plus my dad so was thinking of taking the truck instead of 2 cars. We can fit everything in the bed but the luggage would not be water tight if it rains on either trip. Those are the kinds of scenarios I would be thinking about. Toolbox would not work but I never gave the rooftop carrier a thought...at least for the luggage. Coolers/chairs and such can be left out.

Thanks for that suggestion as my dad has one so we can always try that out this year.

I have a Truxedo, similar to the one you posted, but mine is the QT. Love it. Had it two years, no issues, no sag. It rolls up so you can leave it stored that way and use your whole bed or with two quick releases, the whole thing comes off and you can store it in a garage. Light weight too.

Took me less than 15 minutes to install too.

I've had a Fold-A-Cover on my Sierra for 3 years now, dealer installed, but you can buy them direct. It's a bit more expensive at around $800, but it locks, is weather tight and can be opened from the tailgate side or the cab side. It's removable also, by taking 4 bolts out and easily goes back on. No complaints so far
