Guest, we are pleased to announce that Hydrophase Ridesteady is offering an extra $100 off for JETBOATERS.NET members on any Ridesteady for Yamaha Speed Control system purchased through March 7th, 2025. Ridesteady is a speed control system (“cruise control”) that uses GPS satellites or engine RPM to keep your boat at the set speed you choose. On twin engine boats, it will also automatically synchronize your engines.
I have an AR240with WakeMakers custom ballast setup so no first hand experience with the factory X ballast, but I would guess - for surfing - use all you got from factory plus about 1,000lbs on the surf side swim deck/rear seat - should give you a nice pocket to go ropeless.
I don't use ballast when I wakeboard, but for surfing I did a test of our new custom transom ballast bag and ended the day with that custom bag full (870) port bag 110%, locker bag 25%, starboard bag 50%. Of course using a Wake Wedge.

LOL, NO DOUBT . Wanting to get the best setup with stock bags before I even consider (but unlikely) I will add a transom bag (ugly and we really like that space).

Your boat is too big for the minor 1600 Lbs of ballast.( if it was placed properly it would be ok but not in the factory locations) If you want a good surf wave you are going to have to add ballast somewhere. I have lead bags also but prefer ballast that I can ditch over the side when need be.
