new oil filter failed just did the oil change 2 weeks ago

I really have no idea what caused a very straight line 3/4 of an inch long in the filter to start leaking, it looked like a razor blade made the line from the inside of the filter causing it to leak without warning.
It probably had a flaw in the metal used to make the filter housing.
I have used those Motorcraft fl-910s filters year after year with no issues.
I am noticing the housing material is very thin so I plan on changing from these to a Fram ph-3600 as the cases feel a lot heavier and the filter is a bit longer.

1800 ,now for the fools who think a Yamaha oil filter is superior let me suggest you go do your homework and Google Yamaha oil filters failing rusting and blowing apart.
Actually my first personal experience seeing a marine engine oil filter blow oil everywhere was on a mr1 engine with a genuine Yamaha oil filter.
It is so well known that a lot of dealers actually run grease around the crimp on the Yamaha oil filter to help prevent the crimp from rusting and failing .
And this may just be one reason I long ago looked elsewhere , and I wrap my oil filters in aluminum tape to protect them from the salt water exposure they get in my environment, so perhaps Jeff knows a bit more than the lemmings.

Yamaha brand used to feature great oil filters up to about 4-5 years ago. Those were made in Japan, built w/ solid housing and GREAT filtration material with fleece like filter also used in expensive import cars. Unfortunately, those filters are no longer available, replaced by SAME PART NUMBER, same outside look filters with one notable exception: made it Thailand. Those new ones are cheaply made with thin housing and paper filtration material.

I have since switched to Amsoil filters (which are built like a tank). Kind of expensive compared to many aftermarket filters (and on par with Yamaha brand, which does not come remotely close in quality). But do I really want to save $20 twice a year on critical maintenance?

Yes this subject has been discussed numerous times.
In the past and even on the old board I have posted many times about oil filters and that I used the Motorcraft filters etc So now that I have had a very alarming experience with one I wanted to post this also for the benefit of anyone interested .
Also I wanted to thank the young man and his wife for towing me back to my beach.
What I did not mention was that this was very difficult for them to accomplish in this small skiff with a small 25 hp kicker, the storm is visible in the distance of the picture I posted.
They towed me through very large waves, most of those were Boat Wakes made by large boats with no regard for other boat traffic around them and one large pontoon boat cut them off running W O T right across their bow.

I felt that their effort warranted recognition and I really wished they would have accepted the money I offered them as they really went above and beyond. I could tell he was a bit nervous about towing me through the wash board " Passagrill Pass" especially with all the boat traffic and rightfully so.
I recalled when my timing chain hatched a lot of boats just passed by and never offered to help or even checked to see what was wrong.
So I just hope if one of you folks are in a similar situation you also have the good fortune of having a total stranger stop and help.

In any event the Motorcraft oil filters are now on my do not use list ,the casing feels as thin as a soda can "SERIOUSLY" I am really surprised how thin they are in comparison to the Fram casings so I wanted to alert people to stay away from those based on my recent experience.

I am NOT an oil filter pro by Amy limit of the imagination. However I cut open the k and n filter I took off my engine with the stuck injector and my gosh that thia is well built. I planed to cut off the casing and then cut the pleats out... Ha! Not likely.. The casing was hard enough to get off and the pleats are solid. Others with more experience may know how to cut them out but I had no idea. I was pleased with how the pleats were sealed on the top and bottom. Over all all I was very impressed.

Well I've learned my leason. Last time your hear from me. If I may give you some advice though as this is last chance I have.

After working in the service dept of a Ford dealer for 11 years (2006-2017), we saw the quality of Motorcraft filters start tanking about 2015. We had quite a few issues with them after that. It's a shame because they had a wide selection of filters that used to be high quality that could be used on a ton of applications. Heck, both of my Golf Carts have motorcraft filters on them!

Any info on K&N oil filters ?

I'm on my 2nd year with K&N and no problems. That's not to say there isn't a filter out there that won't fail, but I've had good luck with them on other motorized possessions of mine.

Interestingly I used the Motorcraft filters for close to 10 years with no issues, The casings loot and feel thin and weak. The Fram ph3600 is much heavier and even though it is the same diameter it is half again as long so it is a bigger filter in that respect. I drove the ski with the new filter to make sure everything was running and working ok , it appeared to be fine. I have an assortment of filters including a Yamaha or 2 so I may look into the thickness of the filters a bit more I do like the black gripping surface on the Fram filters though it is a big improvement .

Interesting post on the filters I took a Yamaha filter and placed it in my hand , using the end of my thumb I pushed as hard as I could and the filter housing did not budge, I did the same thing with the Fram filter, same results, so when I did it with the motorcraft filter I could feel the casing flexing from the pressure . So I guess as the casings go the motorcraft filter is obviously thinner, and in the case of the Fram filter even though it is longer giving the advantage to the shorter filters, this filter was solid and did not flex.
