I think I purchased a AR240 from a dealer and I think its a California model. Its says super ultra low emissions with a California sticker on the mufflers. I bought this boat from a dealer in MN. I was never told it was a California model. Is it legal to sell a California model outside of CA or is this just poor form by the dealer not disclosing the model. I don't really care about the few mph its slower it just seems wrong not to say what model it is.

I think you can sell a California model in other states, but cannot sell a new non California model there. They have very strict emission standards. Kinda crappy the dealer didn't tell you. IMO

Yea I bought one of these boats in Virginia! I was super pissed at first, expressed my displeasure to the dealer and even asked the mechanic if these boats have Catalytic converters, he said no! Apparently I was the first to get a "Cat" boat out of my dealer. That even fueled my initial rage even more when they didn't know what the hell they were selling! Ok, I didn't know all that I needed too before buying my second Yamaha either  But that feeling turned pretty quickly once I got it on the water :D I still give my dealer shit though, as I seem them almost every weekend.

I went through this with my dealer. I would let them know that you know and ask them to make it right.

Make sure you mention the hp difference and the lack of disclosure.

If they advertise 180hp you have even more ammo to work with.

Personally I think it's bullshit what they do regarding this situation.

@RobA Did you get a "non cat" boat?

That's all that I've bought in Florida (Sea-Doo). Not knowingly of course, but all of the vins have CA in them.

CARB boat here as well, but my dealer was up front about it and discounted the price to adjust for the loss of 3-4 mph and sold us gear at dealer cost.

Some will recall that Yamaha couldn't sell many of its 1.8 liter powered jet boats in California during the 2012 calendar year (I read that 212 was the only boat in the lineup to get certified and approved by the state). In 2013, Yamaha introduced the CA models that had been approved by the state and were once again allowed to sell their 1.8 liter boats in CA. This is all consistent with the boat descriptions/models listed on yamaha sports plazas (seattle) parts ordering website pages. In years the CA engines are available you can see 6 different ARs, that is, 3 CA, 3 non CA, in both red, black and blue. Yeah, I remember shopping for a 242 back than, thinking I would get a good deal in 2012 for a leftover 2011. NOT! Any 2010 or 2011 240s listed seemed to sell fast in 2012. My local dealer had two 2011 242 LSs and a 242 L on his lot, all with the MSRP for 2011, he put 60 hours on one of the LSs and still wanted MSRP. I have a 2010 242 LS that does not have CA engines/emissions components yet I live in and use my boat exclusively in CA.

FYI as this in not related but another difference in years is that the newer boats have a larger seating capacity than the old ones. Case in point, my 2010 LS seats 10 legally, a 2013 and 2014 and possibly 2012 can hold 11 legally yet they are the same boat. The root cause being the government's/coast guard's change on positions as to what an average American weighs. Basically they reduced or allowed the reduction in the average American's weight. As a result and because the weight of the boat didn't change Yamaha was able to increase capacity by 1 additional person.

.....
Lol!!!
It's not a "California" model.... It's just the emissions sticker....

My Mastercraft .... And others ... Have the same stickers.... I bought it used in Idaho.

The inboard and I/O and Outboard industry seem to have been doing it for years to become Carb compliant.

We looked at boats from all over the country and see those stickers for California on them.

Nothing to be concerned about

@lashburn1 got it right.....my boat came from Nevada originally and I purchased it new in AZ. I'm pretty sure that back then ALL Yamaha's new models were labeled as CARB compliant.

The two boats are mechanically different and have different HP numbers on their emissions stickers... The CARB sticker is not just a sticker...

And the CARB boats do not get better MPG than the non CARB. I have tested this myself. I get 2.8-2.9 MPG at best during cruise. Top speed of 48 mph.

Exact same thing happened to my neighbor, likely from the same dealer in MN. He bought a AR240 and found out after the purchase that it was a CA emissions boat. I'm wondering if they picked up and moved some extra inventory from California and neglecting the fact that they are different when they sell them. Shady practice if you ask me...

That may be the case now - with all the different models, but in 2004 I'm pretty sure the 230 series were all built to the same spec. If I'm wrong, I'm sure @maboat will jump in and correct me.

Well, I'm getting 7,400-7,600 rpm tops and top speed of 46 mph with just me on the boat.

Keep in mind that currents and wind direction can affect the speed. As for RPM's I think I'm right around there as well...

Understood... I was speaking about the new boats.

I'm thinking the same as you. Not certain, but I thought all the 230 series were CARB compliant regardless of what state they were sold in. I believe it wasn't until the 1.8 engine when they started having CARB and non-CARB versions.

Hmmm, I guess I need to work on my online social skills :shamefullyembarrased: I thought I agreed with you most of the time ;)

haha, that's exactly why I know you'd correct me.....

You know much more about the later versions than I do...I wouldn't know about the 1.8 - all I know is that Yamaha made a BIG DEAL about the 230's being CARB compliant. I just figured they would hold the course for future generations.

CA is the pits when it comes to this stuff.....I know someone who ripped all the smog pumps and CARB crap off of all his dirt bikes.
