I had another thread about breaking down in my new 195S. It took us about 2 hours to find someone willing to come out and give us a tow. We lucked out by drifting to a dock and getting the boat rental guy to rescue us. It could have been way worse. Anyway, my boat has one motor and I realize that I need a backup. If we were out during the evening of even a Sunday we would have been screwed. I live in a small town that shuts down early. I saw a video of a 190 fsh with a Stern Mounted trolling motor. When trolling they would turn around the head of the trolling motor and pull the boat from the Stern. It would be much easier to mount than the options I've seen for a bow mount.
Any advice or comment appreciated.

48v ? What kind of motor are you thinking? Most 80# are 24v, which would be 2 12v's or 1 24v. There are also 36v as well. Is this something that you want to use all the time or just in an emergency? I wouldn't personally put two batteries in the front locker, in Mine I don't see them fitting. Also I wouldn't want them slamming around up there as you are bouncing up and down. Then you have to deal with charging them, plus the added weight, which if they are wet or AGM could be between 100 -116 lbs.

I am preparing to mount mine on my boat this week, once I am done screwing with the add a battery and other electronics. My trolling motor batteries will go by my main batteries, but to save on weight I went with LiFePo4, but they are expensive up front. They will be hooked up to a NOCO Gen5Pro so they get charged from the house power. You will need a charger for them the engine stator can't do it. I am using a quick plug at the bow and running wire all the way to the back port side battery areas and mounting a Minn Kota Terrova 80# 60" shaft. Two mounting spots I have been test fitting, 1 the anchor locker lid and 2 the left gunnel which I prefer. I have 5 different mounting custom brackets fabricated right now to see how they fit.

I would also recommend King Starboard. It is what I am using. 3/4" is very strong. I also have the PVC stuff from Home Depot to mount my charger and other things too and it is not as sturdy and rigid as the King Starboard.

I will have pictures soon as I can get it mounted and will post them.

As I mentioned in the other thread, get US Boat Towing. If they are in the waters you are in they will be out in short order to get you.

I meant 24V. I saw that Amazon sells the starboard. It's not too expensive just takes a long time for delivery. I may end up going that route. I want to see if the repair shop can give me a time estimate on the repair this Monday. You're probably in the same boat with the cover restricting how you mount your trolling motor. I'm new to boating but isn't the gunnel the side of the boat. I'm not sure if that would make the trolling motor hard to steer. I look forward to seeing your pics for mounting. I do have a Us Boat membership. I doubt they would come to our small 800 acre lake but I will call on Monday since it would be nice to know that someone would come in an emergency. Thankfully there is still loads of nice, caring people in the world who want to help.

Gunwale is the upper edge of the side. Where your grab rail is monted.

What are you doing to counter balance all that weight from the batteries?

Just realized my anchor storage is under the seat unlike the FSH model. I guess I have to rethink my design.
Why not buy a nice sea scooter and tow yourself in?

I was watching a vide of a trolling motor mounted on the stern. They used a shuttle slide but not sure if that is something you can only get if you buy a Rhodan motor. I'll find out on Monday.

What are you doing to counter balance all that weight from the batteries?
Its only 50 lbs for both trolling motor batteries together. They are lithium

Are all 4 of your batteries stowed together? That seems like a lot of weight on the port side, especially if you have little to no weight on the starboard side. Just an observation.

What is causing your new boat to break down?

Are you on open water (Atlantic) or inland lakes?

I've been boating my entire life and I've never been in a situation where I needed a tow. It's such a rare occurrence that it doesn't justify the cost of a 2nd engine /motor imho for a 19ft boat.

Nothing a cell phone and a call to a budy or tow service can't fix in the worst case scenario.

You can easily get beyond the range of an electric motor with just 1 hr at cruise speed.... if you feel you need it for peace of mind and you like jet boats... then i would suggest you seriously consider a twin engine model. Although if fuel contamination causes a breakdown, that won't help as they are fed from the same tank.

I just paid 42,500 for my new boat. It has less than an hour on the motor and it broke down. We tried everything. I even called the Yamaha service guy. I live in a small town. There isn't a harbor patrol or even listings for boat towing. Most places didn't even answer their phone. We found a rental company that was willing to send out a really great kid to get us. We called them in hopes of renting a boat and towing myself. I don't have any friends with a boat. Lots of things in life are rare until it happens to you. I don't think a 2nd engine would have helped. I don't think fuel contamination was the problem. The boat was 3/4 filled and stabilizer was added and I added fresh gas right before launch. Its probably a loose connection somewhere. I don't think it's anything major but I've read a gamut of issues that it could be. I'll know soon. I also would like the trolling motor for fishing and having a backup motor would give me peace of mind. That is why we all spend way too much on insurance.

There was a cable hanging that caused the throttle to stay open and not start. Anyway, took some pics of my transom mounted trolling motor. It worked beautifully and I was able to steer perfectly. I am very happy to have an extra motor in case I ever have another problem. I'll tweak my design and probably use starboard. For now I took a 2 x 6 and cut it down so it would wedge under the ladder.

I new it would work.

If it was my boat though, I would make the board the full width of the inner ladder bracket, then drill holes through the side of the bracket and all the way through the wood. Then you could inert a rod all the way through when you need to use it and C clip or cotter pin it on both sides that way you will have some solid support and it will stop the chance that you may lose your trolling motor by just wedging it in there.

Some thoughts and musing take it for what is is worth.

I guess you could say I rigged it to work. I used a very strong zip tie just so the board wouldn't come loose. It worked way better than I thought. I imagined no steering and the board wiggling lose. In reality steering was very good and as long as I went forward the board was being pushed forward which helped keep the board in place. Thanks for the good ideas. I'll keep them in mind when I finish the final design.

Hello, just curious if you are still using this setup and did you make any changes?
