Dealership diagnosed one of my ECUs bad. The ECU is on back order for 4 months. I tried partzilla and a few others with the same result.

I sent the ECU to Caron and they returned saying unrepairable.

while I’m waiting on the new one I find a used one on eBay and order it. Upon arrival I plug it in and the engine doesn’t start. Same are the broken one. When I plug the one in from the second engine it fires right up.

Am I missing something? Does the ECU need to be programmed or do you think I got a bad used one on eBay? Do I need to do something to a new one or a used one from another boat or should it be plug and play?

What was the symptom of the ecu being bad ?
Was you boat left uncovered in rainstorms ?

The boat was not left outside in a rainstorm uncovered to my knowledge. Are you suggesting a lightning event or water intrusion? The engine compartment also always stays closed to it would be hard to believe water intrusion.

the symptoms are simply that the engine cranks but won’t turn over. Cranks but won’t fire. When I take the ECU from the working engine and install it in the one that doesn’t fire, it cranks and fires right up. So I have 2 working engines and only 1 working ECU. When the bad ECU is installed in the opposite engine it cranks but won’t fire just like the other engine. So the symptoms follow the ECU and both engines work as they should with the one working ECU.

thanks so much for any help.

That would be a good question for a service center as far as the programing of the ECU. But im not sure it would make sense that you could seamlessly switch the good ECU between the two motors, if it was a programing issue. you may have gotten a dud from Ebay, but i would call the boat shop and verify there's not something that should be done to make it work correctly.

The older models with the MR1 had isssues with water getting in the ECU. Water wicked around and dripped on the ECU cover then evenually made its way in.

ECUs are model specific. For instance, a unit from a Waverunner (FX or GP) will have the same form factor and will work in a Yamaha boat with the same engine but some of the functions/features that were available with the original ecu may no longer be available. There is at least one thread here documenting this.

i recently replaced both engines and ecus in my 2010 242 LS with those from a 2017 AR 240. During the process I did have a new engine hooked up to an old ECU and did not loose any functionality that I am aware of but my boat does not have a connext system. Instead of large multi function display all information is displayed on small (calculator sized) screens built into each speedometer.

I have both of my 2010 ECUs, they were operating without issue when I pulled them almost a year ago. Either one should work in your boat if you have the 1,812 cc motors without catalytic converters or super chargers. The easiest way to verify this is to look for the power output in KW on the engines. Engines with cats produce less KW, engines with superchargers produce more than what I can’t say right now (it’s too early in the morning for me to inspect one of my engines outside in the boat or in the garage but I will let you know soon).

If you are interested, I will sell you one of my ecus for half of what Yamaha sports plaza lists it for. The pics reflect the current pricing with the $1,400 unit being for an 2017 AR 240 and the other for a 2010 242. My price is based on the 2010 242 price, so about $568 before actual shipping costs. Here is the catch, other than offering a full refund or (one time) exchange (excluding shipping) that the unit won’t be dead on arrival, it’s an “as is” sale.

let me know if your interested by starting a conversation with me.IMG_4023.pngIMG_4022.png

Here is a pic of the sticker on my spare engine which shows its power output in KW. The conversion to HP is roughly 179.

FYI the Engine hours are not stored in the ECU, on my boat hours are stored on the related speedometer. I assume on newer boats with connext that the hours are stored in the connext system/display.
