After fishing on the trolling motor yesterday starboard motor wouldn't crank. Turned over fine but would not start. Port motor started fine. Finally, after checking lanyard and safety switches, I got it going by turning off both batteries for about 20 seconds to presumably reset ECU and it cranked up. And no codes or lights ever came on. Any ideas why this might have happened? It has me nervous now, I don't want it to happen when i'm 20 miles offshore. And I dont want to take it to dealer because i'm sure they cant fix it if its not having the problem. Ground wires seem to be clean and tight and both motors ran fine for flushing after we got home.

My guess is one of the three safety switches was triggered. Neutral, lanyard, or clean out. I think the clean out won’t even allow a crank, so must be the other two.

I don't think the neutral or lanyard safety switches allow the starter to work either--at least that's the case on my 2018 212X. This sounds to me more like an ECU or other electronic issue. And yeah, it's tough to diagnose when it's not misbehaving. Maybe others have seen this.

Mine will crank with lanyard issue and or neutral switch disengaged.

Wouldn't a problem with the lanyard switch cut out both engines? I'll test neutral switch, when it finally cranked it acted like it was flooded so i'm assuming what ever did it just killed the spark
