What kind of float do you use, and how do you control the float elevation? That's the other reason we stopped using a marker is because of managing line depth and keeping the buoy/float from popping the anchor out when someone wakes us pretty heavily.
Usually just 4 ft or so of line to float the fender, but the line is adjustable, although I don't remember ever having to adjust it.....

We use a spare small fender, nothing special, again it is just a consideration to other boaters so they are aware of our ground tackle and keep from running afoul of it..... Never in my wildest dreams would I think that someone would use our anchor line marker as a mooring! @sysinu You have a better class of idiot on your waters! I will be looking out for that now though.......:winkingthumbsup"

Very sad Jim, I never guarded around Newport, but the feeling is the same for guards everywhere....... From what I gathered from the story the guard was attempting a rescue near a pier..... We always tried to keep the surfers and swimmers a good distance from the piers for fear of just this kind of thing.... Amazing that in 100 years of service this is their first fatal...... Obviously they run a fantastic program, but it doesnt mitigate the sting of only one loss......

Our prayers go out to his friends, his family and guard brethren everywhere....... Sail on.

I will be camping this weekend and will be keeping the boat in a cove. I plan to use a box anchor off the bow with an anchor buddy and then tie off to a tree/anchor from the stern to move in/out of the boat. Will let that line out for overnight.

My question is what size line should I use to tie off to the tree/anchor? As this is all I will really use this line for I would like to spend as little as possible. Will 1/4" poly line work (1050lbs tensile strength)? 3/8" twisted nylon (3300lbs)?

Thanks

For me, that would depend on if I were boating on a still body of water (lake) vs. someplace with current...

Yes, thanks @MOA_Chaser Sorry, should have pointed out it will be in a cove on a lake. Not sure how bad the traffic will be late in the day/overnight. It will be on Kerr/Bugs Island Lake. Maybe @Lspeedss will know.

I can't sleep unless my boat is well secured overnight.

1) I will not use the anchor buddy overnight. I love the anchor buddy and use it exclusively during the day. But I've had them break at the point where the elastic attaches. Then you have 50' of slack line. Also if the wind comes up your boat can wander quite a bit.

I'd use a 3/8" nylon line on the bow.

2) I'd go for the larger line on the stern.

I use 1/4 poly in the ocean for the shore spike but that's for day use only. It handles the waves and tides fine but tends to dig into your hands a little when pulling the boat in. I think 1/4 for lake use would adequate but 3/8 would be better and more comfortable on your hands.

I drop a box anchor off the front port side and then a shore spike off the starboard stern.

Going to a friends beach house this weekend and since I can't bring my boat to anchor at the cove, we are bringing them one of these. I have to think this will be a lot of fun on the water . It arrived today and now I think it might be easier to trailer the boat than to bring this package/box. It may have come with 8 people. I should have had it shipped...

@96Pirate .. That end gets a little busy during the day lot of camp grounds.. Gas at Steele Creek and Satterwhite.. Nights are flat.. Only some catfishermen and some striper fishermen. No Hard current to worry about. You'll be good with overnight mooring. Most bottoms are sandy/clay. I use river anchors.. No trouble holding. Nothing less than 1/4" poly.. 3/8" braid is always better in the hands. Hope this helps.

as everyone has said. 3/8" line. It's good for two reasons... 1) it won't snap and will last longer and 2) it's heavier, so your anchor set will hold better even without chain (I know, box anchor=no chain... but the heavier the rode the less likely you'll pop free when some asshole wakes you).

I do the same as @Bruce with the shore spike.
Here is a pics of my setup from my most recent camping trips. Basically a shore spike, with an anchor buddy and two buoys (one for the spike and another to mark the end of the anchor buddy). Sometimes I substitute a box anchor for the spike (see the second pic with a yellow anchor buddy, also note the submerged rocks to the right of the boat, last year someone didn't notice it and broke his neck diving off of his boat) but the ideal in my situation would be to have another spike on shore. This past weekend I tied a rope to a tree on shore so that I could pull the boat in to make loading and unloading easier.

Sorry, but I don't have a better/closer pic. The second buoy is under the bow and the shore line is not attached but I think everyone gets the idea.

Damn it Ronnie! We have the same boat, I've done a bunch of my mods because of you, & I've been kicking around getting a drone for a while, buddy of mine has the same as yours, & you're pics & vids are really testing my self control! Lol.

Sorry to hijack the post... I too anchor overnight in a lake cove, but it can see some early morning traffic from fishing boats. I use a box anchor off the front & shore spike during the day, no anchor buddy overnight. I usually leave the boat in about waste deep water & just walk out to it in the morning. I will tie off to a tree or set a 2nd shore anchor overnight if I can.

Ok. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I will go with the 3/8" line as it is not much more expensive anyway.

Depending on the lake bottom in that cove I may just anchor up without the anchor buddy overnight and just walk out to the boat in the morning. But all depends on the slope of that cove. Otherwise I will use the anchor buddy to load/off load.

Thanks again.

I keep a second anchor (rubber coated river anchor) under one of the rear seats and use it as a stern anchor when I do not find anything to tie to. Normally I use the 100' 3/8" anchor line to tie to a tree or other suitable object.

I doubt the 1/4" line would break but if you get an anchor rope it will have a dual purpose.

This is the line I use which is reasonably priced at $22 and much nicer than the typical anchor rope.
