When I do the update driver both video cards say the drivers are up to date... one is fro. 2009 and one is from 2010... seems like there should be newer drivers.

@bronze_10 - You may consider swapping the wifi card if possible with your model to a newer N or AC class one if it is not just defaulted to off. Drivers can be infuriating when manucatures and os suppliers stop supporting them for the hardware you have. I am almost ashamed to admit while I am a Data Scientist for work that personal use for me and my whole family is all on devices made by that fruit company. Bottom line is it just darn works and works together for everyone without me having to mess with it.

Good Luck

I think you will find that encoding videos will still take a while on this machine as I have the Core 2 duo as well and its just getting to be old technology. As the newer OS's have come out they consume so much memory that even my 17" macbook pro does not support the amount of ram I need to be able to run the operating system and do video encoding. I highly suggest finding a computer with an i5 or i7 processor, 2 hard drives, 4gb or more of ram. The 2 hard drives so you can install the OS on one drive then use the 2nd drive just for storage or scratch disk. I might just buck up and find an iMac off ebay for $300-$400 since I already have final cut pro and like using it. Also search for MPEG StreamClip its a great free tool just for video trimming and converting. Super fast and can handle a lot of different video formats.

I have not even started exploring the world of video editing. I have three laptops in this house and they are all old now... this alienware is the most capable of the three and with the new hard drive there is nothing on it so I figure this one is the best to start with.... once I learn and start to understand video editing I may do as you say and start looking for newer computer with the specific settings I would need to make it easier... I think I bought this computer in 2009 so I agree it's pretty old but I am pretty sure it has 8 gig or ram in it. I upgraded it a few years ago and these alienware computers are stupid expensive but they have a ton of upgrade room... this thing can hold a total of 3 video cards.. a crap ton of ram ports... etc.. while @chess was working his magic yesterday I saw where it said 8 gb memory 7.7 useable. Anyway I hope it will be enough to get me started.. and in a year or so I will upgrade

I agree Mac's are the best when it comes to do with anything with video stuff.. He has a decent video card in there, and plus he only wants to use it for that..He has plenty of RAM, so I suggested Sony Vegas http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudio

He can max the CPU and RAM out to encode faster, but you bring up good points.

Even if you have to upgrade your RAM you are talking about a VERY cheap investment as RAM is pretty cheap... doubling it to 16 GIG will cost less than 50 bucks

After seeing he has 8 gig of ram I figured he would be ok. The biggest issue with a lot of older laptops is they have a max ram you can upgrade to. I tried to bump my macbook pro up to 8GB but it caused major issues that slowed my machine down to a crawl. Found out that while I could by 2 ram sticks with more ram my motherboard would only support of the 4gb ram. Also dealing with GoPro videos in high def consume a ton of resources compared to videos shot on my olympus camera.

My 4 yr olds computer is better than that.. time to upgrade and junk that box.

Reviving an old thread here.... i now have two computers that the wifi adaptors do not work.. one i ipgrafed to windows 10 which i whish i never did and the other one is still running windows 7... i have read and tried everyting i have been able to find and understand on line.. still nothing.. multipile driver downloads... multiple reinstall of the system only to have the wifi disappear at the first update... i am stumped..

A laptop is excellent for editing video. I have a 3 year old Asus I7 processor, 16gigs of ram and an older NVIDIA 850M graphics card and speed through my editing. It's also alot faster using Adobe Premier Elements editing software instead of my usual Roxio, but Roxio was my standard for years and it's hard to change habits.

To be honest if you haven't done in a while, you need to do a fresh install. Wipe, partition and re install. I would recommend this if this hasn't been done in over a year. Most problems are from adware, spyware, malware you have probably contracted over time. Driver updates and all won't solve the issue but only mask. Once a year I always do a fresh install to keep things optimum.
