Well my ole trusty 2009 Panasonic G20 plasma TV would not turn on this morning. No stand by light or anything. I tested my outlets in the wall and I have power so that’s not the issue and it must be something inside the TV. I removed the rear panel hoping to find some fuses I can replace but I’m not seeing anything on the power supply board. I love this TV and it delivers a better picture than modern TV’s IMO and there is no replacing the blacks that a plasma can produce so I really don’t want to get some modern disposable LED ‘smart TV’ that will just die out in a year or two. Anyone on here have experience in diagnosing these TV’s or can tell me if there are some special fuses that are hidden I can replace? Worst case I can spend a few bucks and get a replacement power supply board. I really don’t want to have to trash this thing so any help would be appreciate!

I can’t answer your question and have often wondered what plasma owners were going to do when their TVs broke. However, you may want to check AVSForum, I would imagine there are several there with experience resolving issues.

I used to go to avsforum way back in the day and it’s how I came to choose the G20 :). It is a GREAT forum!!

The closest TV technology out today that would compare to my plasma would be OLED because of the blacks but I’m still not a big fan and spending $2,500 or more just isn’t what I want to do right now. Wife doesn’t care and is ok with “throwing out the old TV” but I am not so willing to part ways with it lol.

I think I know what my issue is since I don’t have any standby light when plugged in. I’ll need to get a replacement power supply board which is around $100 give or take a few depending on where I look. Part number is Panasonic Power Supply Board ETX2MM747AFF NPX747AF-1A. Anyone ever used shopjimmy.com for TV repairs? I know how some TV repair places can be so I’m just trying to find a good reputable place that won’t rip me off and has good customer service if I need to make a return. I looked at their BBB bio and there’s a few complaints so if anyone has a TV repair place they’d recommend please let me know. Thanks!!

I try to stay off of there, it gets too expensive. ?

Two TVs ago I wanted a plasma because of black levels but was worried about burn in so I went with an LED and regretted it. Last time I went to buy one, plasma was long gone and that was the end of that. I agree with you, OLED is too expensive or was a couple years ago when I bought. I ended up with a Sony LED that has very good black levels, but still not as good as plasma.

For a hundred bucks, I'd probably roll the dice and try it. I haven't heard of the site but fixing other appliances, there are some random websites that are totally legit and using a credit card, you have plenty of recourse if things go sideways.

NOT a TV repair guy - but I've been employed in commercial and government electronics fields for a very long time.

Disclaimer/CAUTION: Power up at your own risk. Powering up a device with the cover off is not recommended for anyone without professional training.

First - give it a very thorough check. Look for any signs of carbon, melting, burning, corosion, etc and take it from there.

Second - Most quality electronic devices have at least one fuse protecting the power supply input. If you have a multimeter, I'd disconnect power and check the fuse(s). Maybe you can get lucky in that it blew because of an in-rush current spike. If you find a bad fuse(s), re-check that power is disconnected/replace or reset the fuse/try it again. If the fuse immediately pops again, the power supply is your likely culprit. To prove it, you can isolate the power supply by disconnecting the power, removing the PS outputs going to the electronics, replace the fuse again, re-connecting power and trying it one more time.

If the fuse stays, it would be nice to check you PS outputs - if you can get the fuse to stay long enough. NEVER buy-pass the fuse, even for momentary troubleshooting.

Hope you get this fixed. I just replaced my Samsung F8500 (arguably the best Plasma built) with a Sony OLED. It wasn't due to picture but due to lack of technology. My wife wanted the tower speakers gone, so we switched to a Sonos Surround System, from a Dolby pass through perspective, the Samsung was just too outdated.

I was hesitant because the picture on the 8500 is phenomenal, but I am not finding I am missing anything with the OLED. The Samsung now lights up our bedroom lol. Eventually you'll have to upgrade, and I will say don't be afraid to go OLED.

I would start by testing or just replacing all of the caps on the power supply board. I just recently re-capped my sound bar for $17. Are you good with soldering?

I don’t have any solder equipment these days so I’d have to but an iron and wire.

I looked over the board and one of the caps is slightly domed where the others are flat so my guess is that is the culprit. The board isn’t too expensive and would be easier for me to replace than buy the soldering stuff and deal with fixing it. I’ll take a pic of the cap when I get home fro lm work.

You really don't need much other than an iron and a cheap manual solder sucker. I'm happy to recap that board for you if you want to send it to me with the caps from digikey or mouser. Can't be more than a few bucks for the caps.

Well my wife couldn’t take it anymore and I got tired of squinting at a small 27” tv I’ve been using temporarily since May lol. Just placed an order for a 2021 Sony A80J OLED in 77”. It looked freaking amazing in person and the reviews seem to rave about it. It arrives at the big box store on Friday and can’t wait! It will be going in a cove cutout in our wall that it literally made for this TV size as it will fit in damn near perfectly with minimal gaps. I’ll post some pics and a brief impressions of it compared to my old tried and G20 plasma. Still going to buy a board for the plasma to see if she can’t be salvaged but my wife really just wants to take a sledge hammer to it :D

These videos are of the 65” version ...

I’ll still recap that board if you want me to! Garage or basement tv!!

Dang just now seeing your post saying you’d do it. Do you have the caps? I can send you the board and yes it would make a great garage tv and I’d love to be able to salvage it!

Not sure what I have but got a Sony OLED right before Super Bowl. It is awesome and pairs very well with the PS5. Though my old plasma still holds up very well against everything I through at it.
