Apple AirPlay on Boat $22

If using a Mac, try a program call Airfoil. Pretty great if you are using Airplay and want to use it for more that just iTunes.

I got this. Its an IHome. Nice little Bluetooth speaker. Nice sound. We used it on our last vacation. Nice to have some nice tunes while sitting on the balcony watching the waves. It was $35.

And they have a tip jar!

I would tip them just for the fun it. I wonder how often the tips fall in the lake?

I'm late to the party, as usual.....

This looks pretty cool. I have a question.
Does this require constant power or is there a battery - it may have been mentioned, but I have a serious comprehension defect and I'm not ashamed to admit it. :wideyed: SQUIRREL

Does it interfere at all with incoming phone calls? Does it broadcast the call over the speakers?

I'm presently using Bluetooth in the car - both for music and my Escort Live app (radar) so far they have been playing well together, but I'm not to keen on the music quality of the Bluetooth.

Thanks for posting this. I've yet to order anything from Amazon today and I was hoping to keep my streak alive. :banghead:

So I did not like the cheap looking cigarette lighter box with a power switch and I wanted everything to come on with the power button on the face of the head unit.

So I tore everything out and started over. With some advice from previous posters.

Purchased a 12V to USB converter with two USB outputs one for the WiFi access point and one extra for future needs. (Thanks Bruce)
Purchased a voltage sensing relay that will turn everything on everything when the radio is powered on from the face (not a separate rocker switch). This is hooked to the Blue Amplifier wire on most head units.
LED so I can tell everything is working.

****It does require constant power, mine is set up to be powered on whenever the stereo is on. It receives power via USB.

****When you receive a phone call the music pauses on iOS (Apple) device. It does not by default push phone call audio to the speaker, but you may be able to hit the AirPlay button and do it (I will try it this week).

****The advantage I find is the music quality, the range, and I always have a boat full of 14 year old hockey players, so they all have their phones connected at the same time and take turns playing crappy music without connecting and disconnecting devices.

Great ideas in here and nice project box! I'd throw some corrosion X or equivalent on the USB and wiring connections. I've had a regular 12v to 2 USB port adapter rust up pretty bad just from leaving the boat covered. No salt air here either.

A relatively basic install question with this setup:

I am planning to use a 12V to 5V USB converter (just like the ones shown in this thread), then splice it into the outgoing wires coming off the music rocker switch behind the dash(standard on 230 models). Assuming an inline fuse is going to be necessary, is a 5amp fuse to the USB converter going to get the job done? Or any reasons this setup wouldn't work? Seems like the easiest way to add a switch for my situation.

I think that will work great, my problem was my boat does not have a rocker switch to the radio.

That switch already has a breaker so no need for a fuse.

I wondered why you needed the relay. Makes sense now.

I just purchased this Sabrent Airplay too. (Thanks @Russ C)

My Clarion CMD 8 (or 9, cant remember) has a USB input on the back. I purchased this and plan on plugging both the AUX usb at the helm and the Sabrent into this, behind the headunit.

I also have a male Y 2.5" splitter to run the into the AUX headphone jack that is also on the back on the HU.

Does this sound correct?

The USB is only powered when the headunit is on.

Yes this sounds correct to me, your head unit is much better designed for this than mine.
