So looking for opinions on whether adding better speakers or adding more of a lower level would sound better.

Currently I have a stock 07 AR230 which has 4 crappy Seaworthy.

I am looking at replacing all 4 as well as adding transom speakers and most likely adding an amp.

I was debating on the Polk DB651 or the Polk MM651UM.

I was leaning towards the MM651UM but then after reading some posts where members have more than 4 cabin speakers I was wondering if I should go with the DB651's and just add 2 more.

Obviously adding all 8 MM651UM would be the best but I do have a budget.

The 6 MM651UM would run around $450 while the 8 DB651 would run around $250.

I would see a definite savings (including 2 additional speakers if I go the DB651 route.

But I don't want to sacrifice sound. I could always add the 6 MM651UM now and add 2 more later.

I am not even sure where to add the 2 in the bow area. See my other posts here on what I am trying to acomplish...

Mike, not sure if this will help because I don't have an answer about adding better or just adding more, but I have a set of 6 ea brand new Polks which came with my 2015 242 LS and I have purchased a complete new system for it so the new/stock speakers will be for sale if your interested?

@octavio3311 No, the 07's have 2 in the rear and then 2 mid cabin (with 1 actually being under the lounger which we keep down all the time). Go figure!

The 08's added (or moved) not sure 2 in the bow but changed the upholstery, so they are up at seat level. The 07 has totally different upholstery. Don't recall if the 08 has bow, mid and rear though.

@shane hric Shane, thanks. I will PM you.

Let me know, I just posted in the classifieds under stereo equipment too!

Here you can see the differences between the 07 and 08

The 08 has two in the bow between the seat cushion and the back cusion.. and two in the cockpit area where most peple like to put the sub... none on the read deck!

This really is a tough question and really depends and what your wanted results are from this. If you want louder more speakers maybe better if you want quality of sound the nicer speakers will likely be better. Another option may be to meet in the middle as you really are on two ends of the price range spectrum there as the price difference between those two is pretty extreme. Pick a nicer speaker where the price point is closer to the middle and upgrade to 6 maybe once again just spit balling I think you will probably be happy with either set up though. Here is a great article the posted by @Julian in another thread http://marine-speakers-review.toptenreviews.com/ I just upgraded to the Kicker KM's on here as I wanted the LED feature I paid $140 per pair on Amazon they are installed but I have not listened to them yet hopefully tomorrow I can get down there and turn the radio on.

Quality over quantity

Doubling the cone area only increases volume by 3db and since you aren't doubling the cone area the increase in volume will be less then that.

i would do the following

- 4 quality speakers and a quality amp

- then when money allows add those other 4 speakers and another quality amp if you want it to be louder

Thanks! That is the way I was leaning without knowing the details.

So maybe now I am leaning towards the Polk MM651UM and skip the 2 in the bow.
