So my engine in the 2004 XLT800 is kaput. Compression on cylinder 1 is 45, cylinder 2 is 125. My jetski shop isnt willing to swap the motor for me as he "hates" this engine. Its a 2 stroke so this likely happened from the oil sender breaking and then starving the engine

With that said I have a couple questions if someone can assist.

How hard is it to swap the motor? I'm assuming I need to get a rebuilt off the web somewhere.

Can I change it from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke?

If I cant swap to 4 stroke, can I remove the oil sender portion, and just premix? If so, how much oil needs premixed and how hard is that to do?

Finally, is it better to sink the $3K into repairing this one, or find something else out there?

Based on what you asked I would honestly suggest you find a good older m r 1 equipped jet ski and lots of places are banning the 2 stroke skies.

If you choose to go forward with a repair you may want to reach out to Beacon Light Marina just north of Baltimore. They have 2 stroke mechanics. They are a Yamaha Boat dealer, and not a Waverunner dealer.

2 strokes are so simple to work on. I’d bypass the oil pump and just mix the gas. And rebuild the motor.

As stated above. If you stay two stroke, junk the oil injector system and start mixing. Pain in the butt but nothing compared to an alien engine swap. The 2-stroke motor is SO MUCH easier to work on, pull it out /leave it in, check the crank for true, remove cylinder, take to machine shop, bore cylinder next available oversize, put it back together and drop it in.

Good Luck.
