I have read the warnings, and still put too much greace in and blew grease out the seal. How screwed am I? I will have the boat in the water for a week straight. Now how screwed am I? Will it leak. Can I limp by for a week?

I'm dealing with this right now, at Shelbyville. I've been on the water everyday since Monday, when I noticed the grease coming out of the front. No additional grease has come out, boat runs well and there hasn't been any water intrusion. 20160725_150119.jpg

Mine came out between the two pieces of the metal housing.

You should be fine but there's only one way to find out.

the bearings are sealed. the grease is only there as an additional barrier. the system is also flawed in that it can trap air. it is a closed system so the grease is only taking up space (sitting static; not moving) - there really isn't any need for additional grease.

if grease is coming out the front, the vulcanizing is breaking down. this will eventually require a new housing.

Hmmm it looks like it blew on the inside of the boat, if so it will not leak water into the boat but if it also blew on the outside you will be taking on a lot of water when it site anchored. Try cleaning the area really well with lacquer thinner and then seal it with something like 5400 all around the edge so it won't leak but eventually it will need to be replaced.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread @Sacamano ,so you've got grease coming out between the zerk and the transom?

@RiverRat no problem. Mine is leaking along this seam. FYI - I have the older style zerk with a hose up to the top of the engine image.jpeg .

I wonder if tightening the bolts would reseal it?

Strange. I have never heard of the grease coming out in that joint. @Bruce might have a solution.

I'm wondering if you remove the zurk fitting if that will help alleviate the excess pressure. Then replace the zurk.

Over greasing it separates the rubber from the metal housing. That occurs because all they do is drill a small hole through the rubber between the grease fitting position and the inside compartment where the bearings are located, I posted pictures of this on the old board so it is not new info , I believe having the fitting directly on the housing just makes it easier to blow the thing from over greasing it. I ran hoses from mine and attached fittings like they did in the past With the hose taking some of the over greasing pressure if it occurs. To release any excess pressure just depress the ball in the fitting to allow the extra grease to escape you do not need to remove the fitting.

Thanks for the info. I have the hoses and I pulled the hoses off to relieve the pressure. I will let you know how it performs when I get on the water.

I agree with Bruce, leaking through that seem does not seem like where the grease would go from blowing a seal, I'd make sure that bolt is tight

Here is a photo of my housing I circled where the grease can out. I cleaned it up before I took the photo. Bolts are tight.

Since I haven't done my 10 hour service yet, how much grease am I Supposed to pump?

Interesting this guy's video says to pump until you see grease come out where yours blew out.

@haknslash I was surprised to find that video link in our FAQ, I have since added an edit to it stating most JBN opinion is only 2-3 pumps

I had used the 2-3 pumps opinion until this year. For some reason I got paranoid the bearing was not getting enough grease and gave it 6-7 this year. I did not see it coming out as I was pumping. It does not seem like it hurt anything. At least not yet.

Same here @Sacamano , 7 days on the water since I noticed the overflow, including a surf session or two, with no ill effects. No more grease had come out since I first saw it.
