well, always wanted one of these. Found a beauty tonight via craigslist. The guy that sold it to me has circled the globe With it on a sailboat and then turned it to a mantle piece for the past 25 years. Its in decent shape, everything works. I need to find the comlimenting charts for it and maybe a timepiece that fell off a frame for it

Now i guess I dont need that expensive GPS for my truck either?!?!

A sextant! We used one of these a few weeks ago when we sailed around St. Vincent and the Grenadine islands and surprising the guy that did the calculations came very close to our location. He would be very jealous if I showed him this treasure that you scored.

Kewl!

I've always wanted one of those as well. Time to pick up a copy of Bowditch! :):)

SHOW HIM!!! The owner told me typically within 5 miles accuracy. I have alot to learn on this. When did you use it? Dawn/dusk. The light filters on it are cool

You have to have a position of the sun at noon time and calculations are done using that as some sort of baseline. Trust me, I held his beer while he performed all of the calculations. He earned the nickname Magellan because of this. While he was close, a couple of miles off can really affect your ultimate waypoint over the long haul. The Lowrance and GPS is a real game changer. Hahaha

I am going to send him the pic and he will be jealous.

Will you use it to lead the pack to Bimini?

I was pointed to the"kindergarten of celestial navigation" book. He use to teach a course on this thing. I have to think it hurt getting rid of it??!?!

That is way cool @justason . I'd buy one (if I could afford it) just to put it on a mantle, navionics has spoiled me.

Isn't a sextant for picking out frisky girls?? Cam.

I think that you are referring to a sex tent @KXCam22 , or so I've read
