Brand new Yamaha AR 190 settlement cracks. I just bought this boat in March and I already have the settlement cracks in the pictures. How should I handle this? I’m sure it’s under warranty but should a boat be having cracks in it like this? I really hate for them to have to cut into the boat to repair these. I would never suspect this to happen especially being brand new. My wife thinks we need to demand a new boat which I’m sure they wouldn’t do. Any advice appreciated!

I'm definitely reaching out to Yamaha/your boat dealer and getting them to either fix it or give you a new boat if I were in your shoes. That's unacceptable for a brand new boat. I just got one in May and luckily haven't had any issues. I'm sure Yamaha will take care of you one way or another.

I agree with your wife. Something went terribly wrong in the casting of the shell. Little cracks ok (maybe), those cracks no way. I would tell them it's not safe and you don't feel safe in it. You need to fight on this one.

Those certainly aren't spider cracks! Clearly something went wrong with the manufacturing of your haul. Take it to the dealer, let them figure it out with Yamaha.

Those are not acceptable--especially not the ones on the bow. I would take it to the dealer ASAP to document and then enjoy the boat the rest of the summer unless they can fix it quickly or insist you don't use it until repaired. Your boat is not going to fall apart because of those but Yamaha needs to make it right.

Have you crawled under the boat and inspected the hull for any similar cracks?

I would probably also insist on some additional warranty coverage??

Those are ugly cracks, but it’s in the gel coat. It’s no like the boat is gonna break in half because of them..

Not really sure what advice you need...it’s under warranty. Go get it fixed...no big deal. Happens to all manufacturer boats..

Maybe the wrong pics are loading for you?

Yeah these type of cracks on a new boat are not unheard of but they are not normal either. For sure go back and have this fixed under warranty. If you can get them to give you a new boat then go for that but I highly doubt they'd do that. This is all superficial gel coat spider cracks and very fixable. I had a brand new Glastron back in the day that had those everywhere, I mean like the entire boat was one big spider web. They paid for me to bring it to a quality fiberglass guy and he fixed good as new, looked brand new and never had another issue with the boat over the next 15 years I owned it.

Thanks for the feedback. I emailed pictures to dealer since they’re 3 hours away. They believe the entire boat will need to be redone. ☹️ They need me to bring boat in so they can take their own pictures. They will then submit to Yamaha for warranty approval.

Agreed. I told them I paid more for this boat than I did my truck and car and shouldn’t have to be dealing with this...

Good. Did you ask for a loaner boat while they dispute/remedy the situation with Yamaha? We're at the beginning of summer and who knows how long this could take. Tell them this is not fair. Whatever you do, keep, your, cool. Being a dick about it does not help (until you have to be - last resort)

I’ll be meeting with them tomorrow. Sounds like they need to look at it and send pics to Yamaha for approval. Them they will get with the repair guy possibly after the season.

Curious what they say, please keep us posted!
Unless we can not see it here in those pics and the hull is actually deformed there is no way they would be getting you a new boat, this is likely a big gel coat crack, if no structural deformity under it in the FRP shell (can't tell from the pics) - easily totally fixable. But I would totally insist on extended warranty - if that big crack resurfaces after repair than it is a bigger issue.

The other cracks are pretty typical, I have 2 or three spots in my boat that have not changed over the three seasons:

Boat has been dropped off at dealer so they can inspect the boat and file a warranty claim. He thinks they may have to redo entire boat...

This is something that could be done off season if you have one. Don't lose the season over a cosmetic problem. Enjoy it knowing it will be fixed in winter. Don't let them keep the boat into November to fix.

Yes, that’s the plan. No way I’m going without it during prime time!

So, called the dealer to deliver the boat during off season as agreed... and I’m being told the guy I was dealing with is no longer there. They told me to bring the boat and they would get it fixed. I didn’t get an email the next day from the new service manager stating that the warranty claim was never approved as I was told by the former employee and Yamaha stated that they could tell these cracks were from some sort of impact not caused by settlement. I am Frustrated beyond believe with this dealership.

I would suggest you go to the dealership owner/manager, screw the service guy, ( I would have the service guy show me a written response from Yamaha, not his word, and a point of contact @ Yamaha), those cracks are in so many different places the BS of it was caused by an impact just doesn't get it. If the dealership won't stand by you then you should be on the phone to Yamaha and start a serious conversation with them. Check your state's lemon laws, contact the Consumer Protection agency at the state level, and if need be find a lawyer. This is inexcusable nonsense.

Interesting point - are there Lemon Laws for boats like there are for autos?

Yes...

Does the Federal Lemon Law cover boats? Yes, as long as you bought the boat new and it came with a written warranty. It does not matter if your defects related to the hull, equipment, or another part of the boat. The federal lemon law covers the whole boat.
