I am currently in the process of purchasing my first Yamaha! I found a great deal on a AR190 (listed at the higher end of the NADA gide, but bargained down by 2.5k), that is in prestine condition, and comes with tones of extras, but I'm a bit hesitant.

1. I'm not quite sure if it's an AR190 or AR192. The current owner says that it's a 190, however what makes me unsure is that the lower swim platform had that padding material on it. I don't know all the differences between the AR190 & 192, but from some pictures I gathered that the 190 didn't come with padding on the lower level. Granted, that could have been installed after the fact, because the boat has Thrust Vectors XL and an aftermarket depth finder also installed. Are their any telltale differences outside of the motor between the 190 & 192?

2. The engine was just replaced under warranty, and currently has only 13hrs on the new engine. From what I gathered, there was some kind of failure (I assume timing chain) that brought down 3/4 cylinders and the dealer replaced everything including the engine block under warranty and directly from Yamaha.

We paid to have it checked out by the same dealer that replaced the engine (the only one in town), and everything came back good, and they said that the timing chain and can shaft have been upgraded so no problems were expected there. The engine model is a JF180DN, but I was unable to find a date code. It wasn't on the engines S/N plate like I expected.

The people we are buying it from seem like trust worthy people, and have taken amazing care of the boat. There are some few small scratches on the underside of the hull, but other than that it looks great for a 4 year old boat. Also its still under warranty for another year.

Should I be hesitant or am I getting the deal of my life?

Many people add Seadek on the rear swim platforms so thats all he probably did I'm sure its a 190 if thats what they are saying it is.

I believe the 192 is supercharged and should have an intercooler. The supercharged boats were more prone to the timing chain failures but if owners say 190 they are probably right. I think maybe the 192 had a extra pisser but I'm not sure on that maybe someone with one can verify

Throw up a picture, it should be clearly marked on the side of the boat unless the previous owner removed the stickers

Wow, thanks for the quick replys! What is y'all's thoughts on the motor replacement? Is that something I should be really concerned about or no?

I'd be happy for the new motor. the 2014 and 2015 motors are known for that problem. Some of us are waiting for the grenade and then warranty to replace the motor. That's something you won't need to worry about.

Good to know. I know that in a car, major engine work is typically a huge red flag, but I convinced myself that between the warranty and lack of transmission, it'd be fine. Fingers crossed!

Also, the response time on this forum is astounding. Thanks!

The SC boats were not more prone to TC than N/A boats. This may haven been the case for PWC's but it's not the metric we see with the boats. With PWC it makes more sense since naturally there will be more high performance units sold than lesser units plus PWC's stay in the air almost as much as they do in the water. Suddenly injesting water coming from the air doesn't help. Boats are not operated at the lever of abuse a PWC gets which is probably why the boat numbers are not inline with the PWC TC failures. Go through the timing chain thread and on other posts on this forum and I'd say it's a wash which boats seem most affected. For whatever reason 2010 and 2014-15 boats seem more prevalent than others but parts are all the same so who knows why.

Yes if it's Supercharged 1.8 SHO it will have 2 pissers instead of a single pisser. The intercooler and supercharger are also easily identifiable when looking at the engine vs N/A.

I would be happy that this had the engine replaced. Otherwise, I would be looking at 2016+. Report back on model and how you plan to use it and we can give you more advice. As @haknslash said, if it has 2 pissers/peeholes on the side, it is a 192.

A tell tale sign is the handles throughout the boat. Black Plastic handles are on the 190. The 192/5 boats got nicer aluminum bits. Most folks never upgrade the handles, so it's a little better sign IMO. Other little things as well like color of trim around windshield, speaker type, head unit model, and lower swim platform padding are signs as well......beyond the engine difference......dual water outlets on the side are also a CLEAR indication since I don't know why any 190 would have 3 instead of 2.
