Hey all,

Who's got some good Chirstmas gift ideas for friends and family? I've bought a couple things already, the yeti carryall for the wife and a made her a long overdue baby book from shutterfly of our three kids from birth to their first birthday. I have two boys (11 and 9) and a girl (5). The two boys are over toys and honestly say they don't want anything. The little girl is easy, anything doll or gymnastics related. We also buy for a few nieces and nephews as well as a couple close friends.

Holy cow. I'm 48 and I'm not over toys yet.....

A few thoughts for the "non toy" boys:
  • Musical Instruments / Accessories - I mean, what parent DOESN'T want their boys to have a drum set - am I right? Oh, and NO guitar amplifiers under 100 Watts. Just too quiet that way. :p
  • Sports Equipment / Accessories
  • Steam/Playstation/XBox gift cards
  • How about board games? I'm not talking the Hasbro type. I'm talking REAL board games (yes, I've become a bit of a snob in this regard). Check out boardgamegeek.com. Its a huge community of board-gamers where you can find all kinds of great "cardboard" to play. Recommended entry games: "Carcassonne" or "Catan" (Formerly "Settlers of Catan"). Even the 5-year old will enjoy Carcassonne.
  • Open a stock-market account for each of them, help them research a stock and buy them a few shares of their favorite company. Get them interested now and they may never need to work a day in their lives.
  • If they REALLY don't want anything for themselves, teach them how to choose a charity (lots of charities, finding a good one is the trick) and donate their would-be gift money to it.

I can't help you for the Wife - I have such a hard time with mine that I have to hand-make her gift every year.

5 year old girls are usually pretty easy. If she's anything like mine was, you've already got a list a mile long. :)

Hope that sparks some ideas! Good luck!

Dusting off last years thread. I though these were a pretty cool add-on to the old paper airplanes we have all made.
