A tech from the local yamaha dealership from which we bought a 2020 AR240 came to our boat lift for the 10 hour service. I'm assuming it consisted of an oil change a few other checkups. After this I went out for a few hours and returned without noticing any problems. Once docked I opened the engine compartment and noticed a thin layer of oily film over the starboard engine. I looked around and noticed the oil cap was missing. It was no where to be found in the engine bay. I can only assume the tech forgot to install it after the oil change. Has anyone else had this happen to them? It is kind of upsetting considering they are supposed to be professionals. Can any longterm damage come from this? Port and Starboard engine pictures are attached.starboard.jpgport.jpg

Wow, that’s a piss-off. Did you check your oil when you got back? How much was it down? Unless it was down by a lot, I wouldn’t be too worried. Just make sure there’s no water in the oil. Seems unlikely but check to be sure.

Looks like next service will on the house.

That sucks. But techs do forget things. I've seen similar things, air filters, etc... improperly secured after servicing my vehicles.

The tech should not have left an item incomplete but the captain is responsible for his pre departure checks.

Is the foam covered in oil? If so, they should replace it otherwise it will probably fall apart.

Not cool at all. That is why I am learning and opting to do all my own work on the boat, until I can't.

I did this to myself! I didn't tighten it enough (I guess??!!) and never found the damn thing. I found a replacement on Amazon, I think, and cleaned up the mess. Never happened again, because I triple checked them both after every oil change/add!

That would annoy me to say the least. At minimum they should come back and clean the mess up/make sure everything is ok.

After odd incidents like this over the years, I check this stuff before going out (fun track day car or boat) as I don't want avoidable headaches like this. Especially the rare time I have someone else do this kind of work for me. My wife/friends give me crap saying things like "it's the same as yesterday isn't it?" etc when I check the boat before going, but it is all in fun.

Clearly, none of those people have ever owned or been responsible for a boat. :D

I pop my hatch every time I start it and get it warmed up to check things but, but I can tell you that I've never checked to see if the oil caps were on. I can see myself forgetting to put the caps back on, but a tech certainly should not.

Completely unacceptable and I would let the dealer know with a stern conversation. The engine is fine. Demand some cash back as I am guessing you waaaay overpaid for this simple service..

Reminds me of the first oil change a few months ago on my wife’s car....getting on the highway heading home I get on the gas hard and the cabin air filter cover flew off the dash...They never put it back on...plus found a few oily finger prints in the car. Needless to say I had a friendly but stern discussion with the service manager..

@fabian .....what is even worse than this almost unbelievable mistake is that you can not perform a 10 hour check in the WATER. That is an expensive boat you have.....WHO are these people working on it? Is there another dealer close enough to switch too?
