My boat has stickers on the engine hatch that come to 110 hp. On engine itself it shows the 140hp but the ss is supposed to have 160hp motors. In other words, i don't think they have a clue.

Swatski you are right! It's a CARB engine!! I bought it brand new in New Jersey, never thought of checking it, damn it! No wonder I couldn't pass 7300RPM. So now the question is how do I remove Catalytic Converter to get my HP back? I think I need to start new post. Ribbon delete won't do any magic with blocked exhaust by cat. Help!

He reported the difference of only 50-100RPM, with the CARB engines topping out under 7500 RPM at WOT. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure those numbers will be less forgiving for a single. I think ribbon delete may actually do (some) magic.

I don't know of anyone reporting the ribbon delete results specifically for the CARB 1.8l engine, but I would definitely do it -- it is a no-brainer and it can not hurt:
I have done it in 3 separate 1.8 N/A engines (one in a 190 and two in a 240) with very reproducible results - a gain of about 200RPM on top. Or a gain of less than 200 if hitting the rev limiter at 7800+, but that is not going to be your issue, at least not right now. None of mine 1.8s were CARB, but I bet you you will see at least some improvement with better air flow, albeit may not be as dramatic as in a non-CARB.

It is a completely reversible mod -- can be undone just as quickly. You could start by buying nothing, just remove the ribbon (and air filter, too) and see how she runs. I may post a quick report on how I did mine this time, but there is already plenty of info around that topic, so no worries. Let me know if you need any pics or help.

Thanks for a quick reply and the link, very good info, too bad I didn't see it before I bought my boat but most of the posts about CARB engines are from July of this year, looks like a new issue. I'll try to do ribbon delete in the spring, right now she's on the trailer ready for winter

So I did Ribbon Delete on my CARB AR190 plus I replaced stock Air Filter with RIVA Flame Arrestor Filter. Unfortunately I gained only 100RPM, topping off at 7400RPM. Didn't check my Speed with GPS but Yamaha gauge was touching 44MPH mark.

What is your altitude and air temps? Those factor very prominently.

Solid 100RPM gain is not bad, but that's still too low RPM (7,400) - you should be getting at least 7,600 or more at those temps. Do you wet slip? (is your hull clean or showing any growth?). That will slow a boat down dramatically.

The boat was nice and clean, fresh from the trailer. I think it's the catalytic converter killing the power. Maybe other users on our forum with CARB engines in 19ft boats can provide some additional data. This seems not to be an issue on the bigger boats with two engines. You can't see much of a difference CARB vs non-CARB. My friend has 242 Limited S with two CARB engines and he's hitting 50mph (Yamaha Speedo) at 7400RPM (flame arrestors installed) That's fast enough for him. On the positive side, after ribbon delete, engine throttle response improved a lot, and my engine sounds much better
