Bought a 2009 SX230 this week. Needs the starboard motor replaced. So that will be winter project. No problem pulling the motor and replacing, but want to make sure I figure out why it decided to give up so early before I think life is great just by replacing a motor. (120 hours)

I see a lot of discussion about ECU and injectors, but in my readings I thought that was mainly a previous model issue. (06 and older). The previous owner said no water temp or oil alarms sounded. Pulled the plug on the bad cylinder. (#4 closest to the transom) Pretty much smashed it flat. Maybe a valve or the big end of the rod let loose. I do not see any gas in the oil on initial inspection.

It will take a while for me to get it done, but thought I would ask what other have seen as the causes of engine failures.

Anyway have to fix the brake caliper 1st as it tends to stick. I guess it did not want to leave its previous owner...

Thanks for the help so far. David

I will be following this thread closely since I have a 2008 around the same number of hours. Any idea how well the previous owner keep up the boat?

The boat is well kept and looks cared for. Everything is spotless as it can be. The dealer took care of it for most of its life, so I do not see anything of concern there. Just talking thru items with him such as flushing etc, all the procedures he listed were correct as he was helping me understand the boat. I will be a slow go for a little bit as work is heating up. (that is were I off too soon today) Just trying to get as much "what if's and check this" before it is all apart on the garage floor. Thanks

Well there is a vast amount of knowledge here. People here can give u specific part number even specs such as tolerances and gaps......... not... not me but others here. Lol they will chime in soon.

Welcome aboard.

Also if u put what area u live in your profile others in your area may be able to give u advise on where to get parts or things..

Reviving an old thread with an update. Pulled the engine from the boat yesterday and could not help but pull the head off to see how bad . Connected YDS before hand, but without being able to turn the engine could not pull out any codes. The other engine looked fine via YDS. Could to find any issues such as water intrusion etc, but we did find the valve keepers broke on one of the valves. Maybe they broke and that is what started this or that was just one of the after effects...who know. enjoy the pics!

Yikes! I don't know if enjoy is the word I would use.. did u have a look at the bottom end? Connector rods, bearing and all? How did they look? And u just going to replace the entire engine or just rebuild?

Did not take the pan off, but looking with a bore scope thru the hole in the top of the piston. Connecting rod was still attached and cylinder walls did not look that bad. Planning on just replacing the entire engine with a long block. Priced out the head alone and it was close to $1,000 with cam and valves. There would be more money for repairs on the block as well.

We have had several stories of the ECU keeping an injector open, spewing gas into the cylinder, flowing into the oil, causing loss of lubrication. The other possibility is water in the oil caused by a head gasket or exhaust manifold leak. I ruled out flooded engine compartment whereas you indicated the other engine is unaffected and the boat seems to be very clean. I assume that meant the engine compartment also.

Looks like a dropped valve created the carnage, check the valve guide clearance, see if the stem wiggles in the valve guides, if it does you could have a prematurely worn valve guide that made this happen.

Luckily it did not put a hole through the block like I have seen on C6 Corvette Z06's, they have an issue with premature valve guide wear and dropping a valve with the LS7 engines.

My thoughts too. I think i am going to look and see if any of the remaining ones have the wiggle, if they do it probably makes sense to check the other motor.

Engine almost dressed with all its accessories. Missing the oil pump gasket and cooling line gasket were it connects back to the dry sump. So close! Before and after picture below of moving everything over.

New engine is in. Just need to take it to the lake after Thanksgiving for a shakedown and break in. Connect the YDS to it and see what she has to say!
