Ford Expedition and Backup Assist

Well it was finally nice enough to get the boat out and set up ford backup assist with our new Ford Expedition. I was a bit skeptical of this feature but since it came with the vehicle I thought I would try it out.

First, it's fairly easy to set up but have an extra set of hands for the measurements you have to take and plug in to the computer.

Second, once the measurements are I you have to calibrate by pulling forward so be prepared to drive down the road a bit. Once it's set up you push a button to enable and put it in reverse and away you go! The car takes over and you use the turn dial to steer the trailer in to position. It seems gimmicky and being used to backing the boat and our 45ft fifth wheel I will say I wish I had this on my superduty. The precision you have with the dial is amazing! I was able to back the boat on the very edge of our driveway and keep the tires about an inch from the side with NO effort.

If you were like me saying eah I back a trailer like nobody's business, I dont need that...think again. If you have it take the time to set it up! Plus for those significant others that cant back a trailer this would be a dream.

Let me start by saying we had a 2015 F150 and due to the miles we put on our primary vehicle we trade about every 2 or 3 years. We were going to stick with the F150 and actually went and started picking one out...but we saw the expedition online and were intrigued because its everything we loved about the f150 in an SUV with some improvements.

I will tell you the price is insane and between the platinum f150 and this expedition which is loaded but not the top trim...it was about a 10-15kk difference which was really hard to swallow. I will say now that we have driven just about every condition this thing is by far the best all around vehicle we have had and we have had a lot of vehicles, f150,edge,GMC Yukon denali, Chevrolet Tahoe. We have the 22inch wheels which has the ccd suspension. I will say it floats but stiffens when you need it to and with boat weight on it, it didn't sag at all. The 10 speed tranny doesn't have any issues finding a gear. I was worried it would be shifting all the time and even if it did it's so quiet and smooth you don't realize its shifting to 10 different gears. It also downshifts like the f150s do when you tap the brake and that works flawlessly.

Yep! Same here! My wife uses this as her daily driver. We have around 6k miles on it already and so far for a first model year let a lone the first sold in kansas city we have only had one minor issue where when you get an underbody blast at a carwash the trailer wiring shorts out making it seem like a trailer is plugged in. After an hour or so it's back to normal. Our dealer is working with ford to figure out what to do to correct. So far its just more annoying than anything though.

Yeah I’m a fan of the new Expy’s. I have the back up assist on my F150 however I never tried it. Maybe this year I will check it out.

I can't watch the video - so if I wanted to back my trailer 90 degrees, I just line the truck up perpendicular to my fence and use a joy stick to guide it in?

We just received an Expedition catalogue from Ford in the mail. Looks like a beautiful SUV. What kind of mileage are you guys seeing around town and on the highway? How about towing?

I've never tried it with my F150. Seems gimmicky to me but maybe useful for people that don't know how to back a trailer?

I'm picking up my new Ford this coming Monday. I grew up backing up farm trailers when I was a kid. So one could say that I'm well-versed in the area of backing up trailers and could likely do it in my sleep. But I'm somewhat excited to give the backup assistant a try. Heck, if it makes my skills that much easier - why not?

Read some forums and lots of people saying it's a gimmick or I need to check my testicles into my wife's purse befpre using it. I can back up a trailer, but its a PITA at home. It's easy at the ramp where there's space, or maybe into a short perpendicular driveway. I have a pretty windy driveway with some tree openings that are only about 2' wider than the trailer (and a less than 90* angle to get into it). If this makes it a little less stressful backing it in after a long day on the water, that's awesome.

Yeah pretty much. It removes the need to figure out which way the steering wheel needs to go to bend the trailer in the right direction. Again, those who can back a trailer already probably think this is dumb because I did before I used it!

I havent quite towed enough to say what the mileage is but overall city and highway around 19mpg. On the highway for road trips it can get in to 20 five or take.
